Technology of manufacturing a knife stand
The manufacturing technology will depend on the model chosen. Three types of models are the most popular.
- Container with filler. The knife is inserted into the material that securely fixes it in a vertical position. Such filler can be cereals, legumes, bamboo sticks, plastic bristles. For the container, you can take any container that is suitable in size.
- Wooden support with cells for knives. The design has special rectangular slots for the size of each knife. There are several options for this design: one is hanging on the wall, and the second is on legs or a base that is placed on the work surface.
- Magnetic surface. A wooden or plastic panel with a built-in magnet is attached to the wall.
Capacity for stand
After a general cleaning, there will always be unnecessary items. A DIY knife stand option is old books. To create such a retro thing, take 3-4 unnecessary books and tie them together with a rope.
Place the structure on a wooden board to avoid damaging the surface during use. Before inserting a knife into this type of stand, it must be wiped and dried, otherwise the product will very quickly become unusable.
You can assemble a rectangular container from plywood or thick cardboard yourself. To do this, simply glue together four pieces of the chosen material, forming a hollow rectangular or square figure. Then glue the base.
Fillers for the stand
Before making your own knife stand with filler, familiarize yourself with all possible material options.
Bamboo sticks
To make a DIY knife stand with bamboo sticks, you will need a container. You can make it yourself from wood or take a ready-made unnecessary thing of the appropriate shape and size.
Natural bamboo material will perform both a cleansing and bactericidal function. The positive aspect of such a stand is that the filler can be quickly and easily replaced.
Cereals, legumes
Prepare any stable glass container of round, square or rectangular shape – your choice. Pour in cereals: rice, buckwheat, millet. Or legumes: peas, beans, chickpeas. By alternating cereals and legumes that differ in color and size, you can create an original pattern.
For example, you can place ¼ of buckwheat on the bottom of the container, carefully pour ¼ of rice, beans and millet on top. An interesting option would be with white and dark beans.
Plastic bristles from a brush
For this filler, you need to buy two brushes with plastic bristles. The bristles are separated from the brush and aligned under the container prepared for the stand.
We insert the bristles into the container very tightly so that the space between the fibers is minimal. To fix the fibers to the bottom of the stand, a hot gun is used: glue is applied to the bottom of the container.
Attention! It is better to glue the bristles evenly, in a circle, finishing the work in the middle of the product.
Plywood supply
You can make an interesting version of a knife stand in the form of a person from plywood. Prepare the materials:
- four sheets of plywood: 26 x 34 x 1.5 cm;
- magnet 1.5 x 1.5 cm;
- 10 dowels, 5 mm in diameter.
Tools:
- jigsaw;
- glue;
- sandpaper;
- wood router.
Study it carefully, cut out all the elements indicated on the drawing with a jigsaw. When the blank for the shield is ready, mark how the knives will be located. The rectangular holes should exactly repeat the thickness and shape of the base of the knife. Clean the parts with sandpaper.
Please note! All elements of the stand are duplicated: man - 3 times, shield - 2 times, table stand - 2 times. Dowels and glue are required to tightly fasten the parts.
The magnet needs to be built into the helmet, and a sharpening stone will be attached to it.
Wooden knife stand
Carvers will appreciate the option of a DIY knife stand made of wood. This material can often be found in the production of stands.
Wooden wall stand
Materials and tools:
- slats of two thicknesses: medium and thin;
- wooden blank;
- glue.
Take a wooden blank, prepare it for work: sand it. The width of the product will depend on the number of knives that will be fixed there. Attach two slats to the sides, firmly fixing them with glue. Lay the knives on the blank with the handles up, the distance between them should be the same. Fix the remaining slats between the blades.
Attention! The thickness of the thin strip between the blades should be 1-2 mm. more than the blade of the bulkiest knife.
Take three thick slats and glue them at the top, bottom and middle.
Wooden stand with legs
Materials and tools:
- 10 thin square bars 2 by 2 cm for partitions;
- 6 rectangular bars 15 cm long for cells;
- 2 pieces of wood, 20 cm long, for the legs;
- 2 thick beams for support;
- glue;
- sandpaper;
- jigsaw;
- knife.
Take six rectangular bars and connect them together, inserting small squares between them at the top and bottom.
In two thick bars that will serve as a support for the stand, you need to cut grooves to the size of the legs. Connect all the parts together using glue or screws. Be sure to treat the product well with oil, which protects against moisture.
From PVC pipe
Materials and tools:
- glue and soda;
- plug;
- PVC pipe with a diameter of 19 cm;
- varnish;
- scissors;
- hacksaw for metal;
- sandpaper.
You need to saw off the ring located at the bottom of the pipe from the PVC plug. The sawed off ring needs to be cut in half once. The cut element needs to be inserted into the pipe and the ends brought together, they will overlap each other. Measure and cut off the excess part of the ring so that its ends fit tightly, without overlapping each other. Connect the ring using a special mixture: soda and superglue. We fix the glued ring at the base of the plug using the same adhesive mixture. The homemade plug should fit into the pipe, tightly adhering to the edges.
Building a knife stand yourself is within everyone's power. You can choose how exactly to make a knife stand with your own hands: cut it out of wood or assemble it from scrap materials.
