DIY Hot Coasters: Manufacturing Options
Many materials have thermal insulation properties.
The article provides 6 ways to make a hot pad: from wood, felt, fabric, decoupage tiles, old CDs and newspaper tubes. Step-by-step instructions on how to quickly make a hot pad will follow.
Wooden coasters
A hot stand can be made of wood, or more precisely, from cuts of branches and trunks. Apple and cherry cuts have an original structure, and juniper has a pleasant aroma.
To make wooden coasters for hot dishes, you need:
- make cuts of branches 1.5-2 cm thick and 5-7 cm in diameter;
- sand the front side with sandpaper until smooth;
- if the tree bark comes off the cut, it needs to be removed and the side surface cleaned;
- 3-7 cuts are joined together to form a ring and connected with glue.
To make a product of a more complex shape, you need to prepare the drawings of the wooden coasters in advance. A small coaster for a cup or glass is easy to make from one round piece of wood. The option indicated above is suitable for a saucepan or frying pan.
IMPORTANT! Do-it-yourself wooden hot pads absorb moisture and become deformed over time. To avoid this, you can varnish the surface.
Felt coasters
The main advantages of felt are its thickness, density, and non-woven structure, which is sufficient for thermal insulation. It is easy to work with, as it does not require edge processing. How to make a hot pad with your own hands?
- A circle of any diameter is cut out of felt (according to the size of the pot or frying pan).
- A drawing of the future part in the form of sectors of a circle is cut out of paper.
- From contrasting colored felt, 4-6 figures in the form of circle sectors are cut out according to the pattern.
- The figures are placed on a circle (imitating the cut of citrus fruits).
- The details are fixed with glue or stitches using matching thread.
You can also cut other shapes out of felt - your imagination is not limited by anything, as craft and art stores offer many types of this material.
Fabric hot pads
An original accessory for a country-style kitchen can be sewn from scraps of cotton or semi-woolen fabric. How to sew a hot stand using the patchwork technique from fabric?
- The pieces are selected to match each other in texture, color and print.
- Cut out squares approximately 5 by 5 cm.
- The squares are sewn together with a machine stitch in groups of 4 or 9 pieces to make 2 blanks.
- A layer of thick fabric or interlining is placed between the blanks.
- 3 layers are stitched and the edges are finished with bias binding or tape.
Hot pads made with your own hands from fabric can be additionally decorated with fabric applique (if they are made from plain-dyed materials).
Please note! If you used a loose, voluminous fabric as a thickening layer, you can lay a stitch on the product - in the form of parallel or intersecting lines.
Hot pads made from old CDs
What is the name of the hot stand? Don't think about it, just get down to business. The next accessory option is similar to the previous one, only the used CD is used as a sealing layer.
In this case, a special drawing for a hot stand will not be required to do the following.
- Two blanks in the shape of a circle are cut out of the fabric (a disk serves as a template).
- A disk is placed between the blanks, then the parts are sewn along the edge.
- The circumference is finished with braid or bias tape.
The result is original hot pads.
Additional information: Remember that when cutting out the parts, allowances for seams of 0.5-1 cm must be made to the diameter of the disk.
Hot pads in decoupage technique on tiles
What is the name of a simple and quick way to make a beautiful interior item with your own hands? Of course, it is the decoupage technique.
- A cut of wood or a ceramic tile is used as a blank.
- Preliminary treatment: the cut is cleaned and the tile is degreased.
- A paper napkin with a decorative pattern is glued to the flat surface of the tile or cut.
- When the glue under the napkin dries, the surface is covered with varnish in several layers.
Attention! To prevent the hot stand, which you made yourself from ceramic tiles, from sliding on the table, felt is glued to its bottom side.
You can involve children in making coasters. Boys will enjoy working with wood, and girls will enjoy working with fabrics and decoupage. What are such activities for? These family master classes will remain in your memory for a long time, because the coasters you made yourself will always be in sight.
