The benefits of DIY
Lately, hand-made items, or as they are often called in the English manner – hand-made, have increasingly attracted attention. And it is quite understandable: the times when people knitted in order to dress their household members, or even earn a little money, are gone. Today, this side of knitting has not disappeared, but handicrafts have ceased to be only a source of income.
Making crocheted or knitted items allows you to:
- choose the most suitable model shape of the appropriate size;
- decide on its color scheme yourself;
- always keep up with the times, making the most fashionable things;
- make an exclusive bedspread with an original knitting pattern;
- not have a strict time limit;
- purchase materials for work of the required quality and in the required quantity.
The advantages of products made by home craftswomen with their own hands are not limited to this. An important aspect is the significant savings on their production.
We decide on the design and construction
In our country, needlework has always been a favorite pastime of many women, and if you dig into history, you can see that knitting is one of its most favorite types. This is confirmed not only by knitted hats, scarves, mittens and sweaters, but also tablecloths and napkins with the finest patterns, as well as warm blankets and knitted bedspreads, distinguished by their beauty and practicality.
Among the products that can be knitted with your own hands, there are several types:
- small light bedspreads;
- blankets for the chair;
- thick baby blankets;
- thick yarn products for sofas and beds.
Advice. When starting to knit, you need to soberly assess your skills and abilities in this matter. If a beginner craftswoman takes on the work, you should not set very difficult tasks for yourself, for example, knitting a bedspread for a large sofa or a double bed - it may remain unrealized due to the difficulty of its implementation. Here, there may not be enough strength or skill.
However, there is no reason to despair: in such a situation, it is better to start with a small blanket on a crib, chair or small sofa.
The choice of the degree of complexity of the products depends on the skill of the craftswoman, but the most difficult will be making a large blanket for a sofa from thick yarn. In this case, the pattern is not even important: the knitting itself will be very difficult due to the large size and weight.
Necessary materials
To knit a blanket for a sofa, you need to prepare the materials that will be used in the work, the main one of which is yarn. You can knit a product with knitting needles from:
- wool;
- cotton yarn;
- linen;
- silks;
- synthetic fiber.
The choice of material directly depends on the functionality of the product, and its volumes depend on the chosen knitting method and pattern.
If further decoration is planned, finishing materials will be required.
Warning! Do not use old yarn to make a large blanket: the frayed surface of the yarn will give the product a sloppy appearance.
Necessary tools
The main tools of the trade are, naturally, a hook or knitting needles. They are available in various materials:
- metal;
- plastic;
- bone;
- wooden.
"Correct" knitting needles have their own characteristics: they must be well polished and not have too sharp ends, so as not to hurt your hands. At the same time, it is also impossible to knit a quality product with blunt tools, as well as uneven ones.
If the knitted blanket is made from light yarn, you can use plastic or bone knitting needles: heavy material will bend them.
They differ in material, numbers and shape: for different products - their own. The numbers correspond to the diameter of the knitting needle: No. 3 - 3 mm, No. 6 - 6 mm and are directly related to the thickness of the yarn - should exceed it by 2 times.
In addition to knitting needles, you may need other tools.
Name | Why are they used? |
Knitting pins | To "stop" the loops |
Row counter | Fixes the row number |
Knitting thimble | Makes knitting jacquard patterns easier |
Yarn bobbins | For working with colored material |
Marking rings | They mark the beginning of a circular row or a specific place in a pattern. |
Colored tips | Prevents hinges from slipping |
Scissors with pointed ends | For additional work |
An iron, a notebook and drawing supplies may be useful for creating patterns and drawings.
Manufacturing process: step-by-step instructions
It is better to knit a blanket not as a whole piece, but in stripes or squares, which are knitted separately.
Once the bedspread model has been selected and the materials have been purchased, it is necessary to:
- study the drawing;
- knit a small sample of the pattern, casting on and securing stitches according to the diagram;
- dial the number indicated in the diagram, remembering that the first and last ones are not included in the count;
- knit each row strictly following the pattern;
- connect the strips of the product by sewing or knitting the joints;
- After finishing the work, process the edges.
The final stage is decoration
To give the product a finished look, after finishing the work, you can begin finishing. This is a mandatory procedure, because the blanket must be beautiful and durable. You can decorate it according to your taste.
- To make the bedspread last a long time and look elegant, you can trim the edges with a braid in the same color as the product or in contrasting colors, or trim the perimeter with satin ribbon.
Baby blanket decorated with ribbons - It's good to decorate with small multi-colored pompoms. They can be sewn on, but it's better to knit another row.
White fancy bedspread with pom poms on the edges - You can decorate the blanket by sewing a braid with tassels along the edge.
Bright blanket-bedspread decorated with tassels
Some craftswomen use various fabrics for decoration, which they place along the edge of the product or on separate areas of its surface, as well as on the reverse side. In the latter case, the bedspread will not directly touch the body or bed linen.
