High-tech is the design of the future. This is what interior designers call it, actively using simple, clear forms when decorating the kitchen, living room and even the bedroom. This style is close to modern, balanced people who prefer functional furniture and visually simple room design.
The absence of “color noise”, calming conciseness, calm shades – these features have made high-tech one of the most popular trends in architecture and design for several decades.

History of the high-tech style
The translation of the phrase "high-tech" means "high technology", which perfectly characterizes this modern style. Its main feature is rejection of numerous decorative elements, which we are used to seeing in other interiors. Designers effectively combine comfort, ergonomics and functionality, giving the room an unconventional look. High-tech has many options from the most laconic to those close to the usual Scandinavian style.
High-tech appeared in the 70s of the last century, simultaneously with the penetration of urbanism into all spheres of life. It is based on the idea of using all the technological benefits of civilization and the rejection of unnecessary decorations. At first, the new direction in design caused heated debates and a wave of rejection. Thus, the buildings built in Paris in the high-tech style became the cause of protests by city residents who demanded that they be demolished. By the way, Georges Pompidou Centre for Contemporary Art They nicknamed it "the oil factory."
It was high-tech that gave birth to the popular cyberpunk, which has firmly entered comics and cinema. Its manifestation can be seen in the famous "Matrix", filmed in 1999. The style is in particular demand in Eastern culture, especially in industrial Japan. Thus, high-tech and cyberpunk are the basis for a large number of trends in urban urbanism, architecture, animation.
Nowadays, high-tech has firmly entered the history of architecture and design, having acquired many fans. After all, it is this style that allows you to make the engineering parts of buildings and rooms part of the interior. For example, in modern houses, stairs are on display, and not hidden between the walls. This is very convenient when decorating offices in large industrial buildings, since there is no need to hide communication pipes.
High-tech interior
Stretch ceilings, without which it is difficult to imagine a modern apartment, appeared under the influence of high-tech.
When decorating rooms in the high-tech style, designers pay special attention lighting. Since there are no decorative elements in such an interior, their place is taken by original lamps, made as simply and technologically as possible. The use of intricate ornaments and fancy lampshades is not allowed.
Signs of the "high-tech" style:
- the color of the walls is in the same palette as the shades of the furniture;
- simplicity and geometric shapes;
- use of metal elements;
- an abundance of glass furniture and unusual lighting points;
- imitation of concrete and brick in wall decoration;
- most often doors sliding;
- a large number of lamps are located in different parts of the room;
- use of finishing materials that are typically used for industrial buildings;
- the presence of a spacious central area;
- engineering structures are not hidden, but integrated into the interior.
Basic materials: steel, chrome, aluminum, glass. Rejection of traditional materials.
Kitchen in high-tech style
High-tech is an ideal solution for decorating a small kitchen or studio. With a competent drawing, you can mark out everything you need in a small space. In addition, this style visually makes the room brighter and more spacious. Instead of natural materials, plastic, glass, polycarbonate are used, which are easy to care for and are highly wear-resistant. Chrome household appliances and large equipment go well with metal surfaces of countertops and a kitchen island.
High-tech kitchens use smooth, glossy materials for countertops, appliances, and cabinet doors. Wall panels are plain, without sinuous patterns or garish designs. Simple blinds or roller blinds are installed on the windows. Elegant tulle or heavy curtains will be inappropriate in such an interior. Designers make kitchen sets in this style as closed as possible. Everything in the furniture should be functional and serve the main purpose - comfortable and quick cooking. Modern furniture is combined with high-tech devices.
There should be a lot of lighting in a high-tech style kitchen: lamps are placed in spots above the table, in the work area, under the cabinets, on the ceiling and on the walls.
Kitchen “high-tech” can be conditionally divided into two directions:
Ultra-minimalismAt first glance, such a kitchen may seem “bland”, because it will not have extravagant details and unusual furniture. Everything is laconic and simple, but thought out to the smallest detail. Each device, each shelf has its own purpose and serves a specific purpose.
Design Features:
- matte ones are the most popular stretch ceilings made of PVC fabric;
- porcelain stoneware, stone and concrete are used for floor coverings;
- the walls are painted in one, discreet color;
- brickwork is allowed on the kitchen backsplash or on one of the walls;
- walls and ceilings made of untreated concrete look impressive and original;
- the furniture contains only right angles;
- household appliances are built into the surfaces kitchen furniture;
- all household appliances should be of a single color and match each other in texture;
- Preference is given to “smart” technology.
Living room in high-tech style
The technological nature of the style implies minimalist color schemes. Cool shades of gray, black, and white will fit perfectly into the living room. You can dilute the strict palette with light beige, noble green, and dark blue colors. It is allowed (although with great caution) to use bright elements. They should be small, and their color should be pronounced. This could be a red vase or a yellow geometric figurine.
Shelves and cabinets should not be smooth, but clearly outlined, fittings are used minimally. Upholstered furniture is not pretentious, but simple and restrained both in form and color. Preference is given to upholstery made of eco-leather or practical plain fabric. The coffee table should be visually extremely simple. Often designers install models made of glass or metal, and use polished stone (natural or acrylic) for the tabletop.
Characteristic features of a high-tech living room:
- self-leveling floors with a glossy surface that visually expands the space;
- the color of the floor depends on the size of the room. Dark tones look good in large rooms, but they will visually make a modest living room even smaller;
- the walls are mostly painted snow white;
- glossy ceilings;
- panoramic windows;
- absence of ceiling and floor skirting boards;
- a large number of lighting points: chandeliers, sconces, floor lamps.
Bedroom in high-tech style
Usually, for the bedroom it is preferred by calm, purposeful people, not inclined to romanticism, for whom the convenience and functionality of the room come first.
The main feature of high-tech in bedroom design is lack of bright colors. White walls and ceilings add volume to the room and make it airy, while dark gray and black elements emphasize the laconic forms. At the same time, the abundance of colors will not distract from relaxation. You can soften the contrast with smoky, light brown and muted blue tones. Neutral pastel colors are also allowed.
Stylistic techniques for the bedroom
Glossy floors look original in the high-tech style. Usually, porcelain stoneware, marble, and self-leveling floors are used for them. It is important to think through the heating system so that in the morning it is pleasant to touch the warm floor with your feet.
It is better to choose stretch ceilings, as you can install any number of lamps in them and highlight a separate area with a different color. To make the interior more cozy, you can choose a beige shade for the ceiling. Matte or chromed aluminum ceilings look original.
Particular attention should be paid selection of furniture. The bed is the central object in the bedroom. Designers choose laconic models on a metal frame without high headboards. A bed with a lifting mechanism and an orthopedic base will fit organically into a modern interior. Built-in lighting around the perimeter is appropriate, as well as monolithic bedside tables connected to the headboard by a common frame.
