What is a muffle furnace
Inside the system, it is possible to heat different materials to the required level. At the same time, unlike other furnaces, the muffle design has a special insulator. It protects the material from the negative impact of fuel combustion products.
The presence of a muffle facilitates uniform heating of workpieces without contact with hot gases. Due to the fact that the workpiece is in an isolated chamber, the heating process takes longer. At the same time, the quality of processing increases.
The removal of harmful components that appear during fuel combustion is carried out by the ventilation system. The furnace unit has a temperature controller that allows you to set the required operating mode.
Purpose
With the help of homemade heating structures you can:
- To fire ceramics.
- Harden cutting steel objects.
- Melt metals.
Either gas or electricity is used as an energy source. However, the system can be modified to use solid fuel or other flammable substances.
Taking into account the technical characteristics of the equipment, the oven can be heated from 100 to 2000°C.
Varieties
Metal heating units are divided into several groups. They differ in the fuel used, power and linear properties, chamber placement and other characteristics.
By design
Furnaces available for sale are divided into:
- Tubular or cylindrical.
- Horizontal and vertical.
By fuel type
Electric models are in the greatest demand. They heat up to the required temperature in a short period of time, and are also distinguished by their safety if the operating rules are followed.
This type of furnace supports flexible adjustment of operation and has advanced automation. Electric units are quite compact and suitable for use in a home workshop or apartment. They can operate from a 220 V network. The main thing is that it is grounded.
Gas modifications are distinguished by efficient heating of workpieces, but are inferior to the previous type in terms of safety.
However, to assemble equipment at home, you need to obtain permits from the relevant services.
Coal-fired models are less efficient because it takes a long time to reach the required heating level. Also, owners of coal furnaces need to arrange a separate room for installing the unit and storing fuel. The advantage of the devices is that they maintain the required temperature for a long time and are economical.
By type of heat treatment
Taking into account the characteristics of the heat-treating substance, furnaces are:
- Airborne.
- Vacuum.
- Operating on inert gas.
By camera location
The combustion tank can be placed vertically or horizontally. The second option is considered more convenient and easier to manufacture. At the same time, it is suitable for firing various materials, including ceramics, metal alloys and glass. Vertical devices have a high efficiency and heat the structure evenly, but it is difficult to build them with your own hands.
What kind of oven can be made at home
The easiest way to assemble an air furnace is with your own hands. It can be made in any convenient form, taking into account the interior features and layout of the house.
Pros of DIY
With the help of a homemade furnace, it is possible to process parts from various materials using the effect of nitrogen, chromium or carbon. The presence of muffle insulation eliminates contact of the workpieces with the components released during operation. This allows for processing only by temperature.
In addition, homemade options are much cheaper than store-bought models, and you can assemble them yourself without the help of specialists.
Design and operating principle
The term "muffle furnace" refers to a closed vessel that maintains the required temperature for heat treatment of metals without exposure to external factors such as combustion products.
The equipment differs in its internal structure. When creating electrical devices, those components are used that will provide the stated heating intensity.
To assemble the chamber, fireclay refractory bricks or ШПГТ-450 slabs are used, which can withstand peak temperatures and are resistant to acids or alkaline environments.
The outer surfaces are covered with heat-resistant fabric. In most cases, mineral wool with basalt components is used, since it is resistant to sintering. As a result of the reduction in heat loss, the efficiency of the device increases. The furnace heats up to the required temperature faster, retains heat longer and consumes less energy from an external source.
To adjust the temperature regime, special regulators are installed in the design. They are:
- Digital.
- Analogue.
Disadvantages of a DIY muffle furnace
The negative aspects of self-assembled structures include:
- Heating is quite slow. This leads to difficulties in adjusting operating modes.
- Increased energy consumption. In terms of efficiency, the units are inferior to classic furnace systems without a muffle.
What can it be made of?
In addition to refractory boards, bricks and metal alloys, a muffle furnace can be made from old, unused items. Among them:
- Clay pot for household use.
- Steel bucket.
- Oven.
- Electric stove.
To create an effective muffle system from the listed improvised means, you need to use a little imagination and follow the instructions.
How to calculate the power for an electric furnace
The permissible thickness of the wire depends on the current strength. If you choose a material with an insufficient cross-section, it may melt, overheat or burn out during the operation of the furnace.
In the case of nichrome conductors, the permissible current strength depends on their heating temperature. For convenient calculation of power, special calculators and tables with recommended parameters for different materials are provided.
How to calculate the surface power of a heating element
To obtain accurate parameters, you need to take into account the diameter and estimated length of the wire. If the results exceed the permissible level of surface power, you will need to make some changes to the calculations. With the help of calculators, this process can be simplified as much as possible.
Calculating the length of wire for a heating element
It is necessary to specify the total resistance of the heater. After receiving accurate data on the specific resistance of the wire required for assembling the spirals, its length can be correctly calculated.
Creating a drawing of the future furnace
A step-by-step guide to assembling a muffle furnace begins with preparing the drawings. It is quite difficult to design a diagram of the future structure on your own. Therefore, you can find typical drawings of factory models.
It is recommended to make sketches of the design for ease of laying layers and connecting heating parts.
Control system
The set of tools responsible for monitoring the operation of equipment includes several devices. They are combined into a common scheme and complement each other.
What elements will be required?
The muffle furnace control system consists of:
- Thermoregulator. It is allowed to install any compatible modifications, for example REX-C100 or Ш-4501.
- Thermocouples. Responsible for rapid temperature change inside the insulator and sends the recorded data to the thermostat. In most cases, the thermocouple is located on the back wall of the muffle chamber. A special through hole is provided for it. For furnaces, a thermocouple with the designation XA, XK or PP is suitable.
- Radiator. The device must have a solid state relay.
- Switches. One element has 2 keys, and the second one has 1.
Assembling the structure
When making a control unit, you need to connect a thermostat with an optimal heating level to it. You can take either an electronic or mechanical model. Then you should connect a thermocouple, a solid-state relay, and a switch.
The signal wires from the thermocouple must be connected to the thermostat. If the heating temperature is lower than the set value, it will start the power supply to the heater. If the indicators are exceeded, the system will be switched off.
In most cases, the switching components are laid on the rear wall, with a special platform (shelf, bracket) provided for their fixation.
If you don't have the skills to work with electronic components, it's better to buy a ready-made unit in a store. If the muffle furnace breaks down, it can be used for other equipment.
Accommodation requirements
The system should not be installed in small, isolated rooms without ventilation, such as closets or storage rooms. The oven should not be placed in rooms where people sleep, eat or spend their leisure time. It is better to allocate a separate room with an open window for the equipment, where you can set up a small firing station.
It is important to consider the permissible distance from the stove to any objects or walls. It is not less than 30 cm.
It is forbidden to store flammable objects near the muffle unit. This also applies to the material of the walls surrounding the furnace. It is better to use concrete or tiles.
The same requirements apply to the floor covering. There should be no carpets, textiles or parquet on it.
Making a stove
For long and trouble-free operation of the muffle device, it must be designed correctly. It is worth considering the general recommendations and drawings.
Selection of material for manufacturing
The following materials need to be prepared for assembly:
- A 2.5 mm thick steel sheet or a case from an old, broken household appliance (gas stove, washing machine, refrigerator).
- Metal pipe or corners.
- Fireclay refractory brick.
- Binder with high temperature resistance.
- Silicone or heat resistant gaskets.
- Automatic stabilizer and thermostat.
- Nichrome wire 1-2 mm thick for assembling the coil.
- Basalt wool.
- Switching.
Necessary consumables and tools
To process the materials, you need to prepare a grinder, a set of metalworking tools, and electric arc welding. The consumables you will need are a set of electrodes, heat-resistant silicone, nichrome wire, and metal corners.
Step-by-step instructions for making
The body of the future unit is easy to construct from improvised means. You can prepare metal boxes from household appliances. If they are missing, it is better to make a structure from galvanized steel.
Corners should be installed on the bottom, which will strengthen the base, increasing the safety margin of the entire system. They can be replaced with metal pipes with a cross-section of 1.5 cm. Reinforced legs should be attached to the corners of the bottom.
In addition, it will be necessary to strengthen the door and wall, as well as the upper part of the body.
The bottom and internal elements must be covered with basalt wool in a 1 cm layer. The material can be secured with metal corners and covered with sheets.
Fire-resistant bricks of the ШЛ brand or fiber boards should be placed on the bottom of the unit. The blanks can be connected using fireclay, masonry mortar or mortar. For more reliable fixation, 30% of cement should be added to the consistency.
The bricks will need to be laid as close to each other as possible, with a distance of 0.5 cm between each element. The fireproof mixture must first be moistened in water. Each element can be additionally moistened before laying.
The first stage will require the installation of the bottom. Then you should proceed to the arrangement of the walls and the upper part, taking into account a slight upward slope. The door can be laid out with bricks so that the laid layer fits into the opening of the body.
Afterwards, hinges need to be welded to it, and the door needs to be adjusted to the dimensions of the gap between the masonry.
After the cement mixture has dried, grooves should be made in the wall material for installing the nichrome spiral.
Next, you need to lay 2 circuits to regulate the temperature values. On the front part of the stove, you will need to attach a switch with 3 contacts on one side and 2 on the back.
For safe operation of the equipment, it is necessary to install a reinforced socket with grounding. It is also possible to supply power to the device from the panel using an automatic switch.
All that remains is to dry the finished oven in the sun or near a heating device for 1-2 months.
Checking functionality
It is quite easy to assess the readiness of the oven for the first treatment. It needs to be connected to the power supply and the minimum power mode on the spiral needs to be set. If the unit is in good working order, it will not emit steam.
Muffle furnace from steel bucket
A powerful device for melting metal or firing ceramic items can be made from an old container. The main thing is that the bucket is airtight and has sufficient dimensions for working with the blanks.
What materials will be needed?
To install a stove from a bucket you will need:
- firebricks;
- welding machine;
- Bulgarian;
- steel angles for obtaining stiffening ribs.
In addition, it is necessary to purchase thermal insulation materials, such as asbestos sheets or basalt wool.
Manufacturing process
The body of the future stove should be cut using a grinder. The height of the bucket should be 45 cm. Next, in the side wall of the container, you need to drill a hole at a distance of 10 cm from the bottom. For this, you can use a drill with an attached hole saw with a diameter of 2.5 cm. Air or gas will enter through the side holes.
Then the inner surface should be insulated with 5 cm thick mineral wool fibre.
The material should be cut out where it covers the hole in the bucket. Then it should be sprayed with a hardener and wait 24 hours for the chemical reaction to complete.
A steel pipe or nozzle must be passed through the hole in the wall.
All that remains is to heat the furnace with the selected type of fuel and begin melting the metal.
Clay pot muffle furnace for small needs
The simplest version of the furnace involves using an electric stove, clay pots and a piece of firebrick. This will quickly melt the material for further processing.
First, you should place a piece of fireclay material on the stove so that the ceramic blank does not come into contact with the spirals on the stove. Mineral wool can be used to insulate the structure.
At the bottom of the first container, you need to put asbestos circles with a hole in the center with a diameter of 20 mm. A small pot, which is a muffle, should be wrapped with asbestos in several layers and each of them should be glued with silicate glue.
After fixing the side layers, you need to wait for the glue to dry for 30 minutes, and then start assembling the structure. To ensure that the edges of the pots are even, it is recommended to carefully turn the product over and lay it on a flat surface, and then press it down with a heavy object from above. The assembly should be in this state for at least 30-60 minutes.
Safety precautions when working with a muffle furnace
Before using the furnace, make sure that its elements are in good condition and comply with the standards. Working with a device that has open heating elements requires special responsibility. Before firing the clay, a test procedure should be performed. If the section has crumbled, the heating temperature should be increased.
It is prohibited to work with equipment that is not connected to ground. Do not start using the device if there are chips or cracks on the body. It is prohibited to touch the device during operation or touch the moving spiral.
