Before looking for drawings, purchasing the necessary materials, choose what kind of product you want to receive and what model you can make. Transformer beds are divided into several varieties.

  • Bed-wardrobe - with the help of a lifting device, the bed is pressed against the wall and looks like a simple wardrobe. This type is the most popular among the others and is considered one of the most practical in small living spaces. It is easier to create a do-it-yourself transformer bed of this type than other models.

  • One of the innovations is that the sleeping area rises to the ceiling and is hidden there. It is considered a transformer, since such a design instantly frees up a large amount of space, becoming invisible.

If you are a small specialist and are starting to make a transforming bed with your own hands for the first time, opt for a simpler option. As mentioned above, this is a bed-wardrobe. To begin with, make or find a drawing of the future product with the necessary parameters, marking of fastening and connection points.

DIY Wardrobe Bed
A bed that can be converted into a wall cabinet if necessary

The model of the bed-wardrobe is divided into three main parts, which will first need to be created separately and then combined into one whole. Below are these elements and the materials needed for production.

  1. The frame can have any shape and appearance, the main thing is a large niche in which the bed will be placed. The niche should be made based on the parameters of the mattress. Laminated chipboard sheets can be used as a material, they are quite unpretentious in processing, have an affordable price. In order to avoid chips during sawing, it is better to order chipboard cutting according to the required parameters from the manufacturer. Such a service is inexpensive, in addition, all the edges of the parts will be covered with edge tape.

  2. The base of the bed - to make it you will need a wooden beam - from it you will make a frame and slats or a sheet of plywood on which the mattress will be placed. Chipboard or MDF sheets are fixed at the bottom of the base - when folded, they will serve as the front of the cabinet, so this detail should be approached from a design point of view.

  3. The lifting mechanism unites the wardrobe and the bed. Since it bears most of the loads, it is advisable to purchase such a mechanism ready-made. This is one of the main parts of the transformer bed, you should not save on it, give preference to a high-quality system.

Manufacturing process

Connecting two parts
Connecting two parts for a double bed - frame and sleeping part

The assembly of a transformable bed consists of two steps - first, you need to make a frame for the folding mechanism, and then - a sleeping place. On the Internet, you can find ready-made dimensions for standard single and double models, but if you need other parameters, you will have to calculate them yourself. The "Furniture Designer" program will be an excellent assistant in this.

Securely fix a strong metal strip to the wall with anchor bolts. This will be needed to strengthen the frame with metal corners. For the base of the frame, take two reliable boards - they perform a load-bearing function, the average length for standard transformer beds is about two meters. At the edges, at the top and bottom, fix them with a cross board using glue and screws. Attach the lining to the finished frame using glue and screws. Remember - the depth of the box must match the thickness of the bed. In order not to end up with a box that does not fit the finished product, it is better to make it a few centimeters larger.

Next, you can start assembling the folding bed. Use plywood that meets the required parameters as a base. To avoid damage and deflection of the material, strengthen it from below by installing four boards along and across the future product. For greater comfort, you can equip the base of the bed with various sides, but remember - nothing should interfere with the lifting mechanisms.

Connected frame and base
The frame and base are connected, with the structure reinforced by a wooden beam in the middle

The next step is to attach the frame to the wall. For a long service life of the finished product, choose only high-quality fasteners. Use hinges to fix the folding part to the frame, and secure its free end with special fasteners - thanks to them, the transformer bed stays folded and does not unexpectedly unfold. If you are going to varnish the wooden surfaces, it is advisable to do this while the folding part is not fixed to the frame.

The last step is decorating the finished product

The transforming bed can be supplemented with small cabinets, shelves or mirrors, which will make the structure more functional. In modern design options, the product can be painted with acrylic paints - the most popular bright colors are in children's rooms. The bedroom can be decorated using a combination of several colors and applying patterns. If you can't draw, you can find many stencils on the Internet - print out the one you need and use it to create a unique design.

To better match the wardrobe, the outer side of the product can be decorated with overhead fittings, false crossbars and imitation handles. You can also create additional niches using mirrors or install additional lighting elements - bulbs, LEDs.

Finish the end of the boards with self-adhesive edging - you can buy it at any hardware store. Apply the edge with the adhesive side to the end, go over it with a hot iron. Then go over it with a dry cloth, pressing it down carefully. Cut off the excess and sand it with sandpaper.

As you can see, the result of a do-it-yourself transformer bed will be no worse than a factory one, and somewhere even better and will become unique in its kind. The main thing is desire, patience, strict adherence to instructions and the use of high-quality materials.
