In a one-room studio apartment, a cellular arrangement of objects is most often created: a sleeping and wardrobe-bed sector; a recreation and leisure area with a TV, coffee table and sofa. If the square footage of the apartment allows - a dining table for guests. Next, we will talk about dividing the room into a bedroom, wardrobe and about organizing a sleeping place - a bed in a niche.

Types of beds
The diverse flight of human fantasy and ideas, the accumulated experience of industrial furniture companies, single furniture makers and just ordinary people who did the renovation in their apartment themselves, as well as the Internet, provide the opportunity for the development of many different designs, interior designs, locations, combinations, and applications of beds.
The medical industry offers specialized orthopedic beds (mattresses).
By number of sleeping places:
- single and double;
- by age:
- for children, adults and even for the elderly;
- They also differ in design, shape, material, etc.
Since this review covers the design of a bed in a niche for one-room apartments, we will consider them in more detail.
Types of niche beds
In addition to the listed types, a sleeping place in a niche is divided into built-in and non-built-in. In turn, the first can be: folding and sliding. Non-built-in - like transformers. Just like beds, the niches themselves differ in design and purpose. This can be a podium with a built-in roll-out bed, shelves for clothes or bed linen, located under the bed and behind the niche, respectively, or a bolder solution - a niche-wall, in combination with a folding bed.
It is also possible to install it on the second tier. If there is a separate place for a wardrobe and a shelf, it would be interesting to make a niche in a thematic style, using decorations, etc. (a version of a children's bed).
Features of different types
The peculiarities include the fact that the purpose or functionality of the beds built into the niche is different. That is, in the case of cabinets and shelves there will be more practicality, and in the case of a theme - decor, beauty, originality. These two conditions can be combined.
Let's say, applicable to a child's bed, a kangaroo with bags-lockers, a castle when arranging a bunk bed in a niche: the gates of the castle are beds; the windows are cabinets with glass doors, the towers of the castle are lamps.
In relation to adult beds, the folding version with a wall niche is interesting for its originality. The bed is removed to the wall and frees up additional space in the room. On the bottom of such a bed, it is possible to arrange decorative design: a picture, a family photo gallery, an interior composition of unusual vases, jugs, artificial plants and flowers. The last option will require fixing the interior items, since this is the bottom of the bed, and at night you will unfold it for sleeping. Otherwise, the imagination is limitless!
Try to place a large mirror with a carved frame or without it on the bottom of the bed, it all depends on the style of the room design (loft, modern classic, high-tech, etc.), or a folding desk. This will require technical tricks and some knowledge of physics and geometry. It will take a little more time to manufacture and install (provided you do the work yourself), or a larger financial investment, but the return will be greater. An elevated mood and envious and inquisitive glances of guests, from the beautiful execution of simple things.
When space is limited, combinations of a niche-podium are used or the sleeping area is moved to the second tier. The podium option can be made in the form of a bed on top and pull-out drawers at the end of the podium. But it is more practical to place the bed at the end of the niche - a pull-out bed on wheels or guides with folding legs. The top is a podium with a work space (desk), or a recreation area with a sofa, coffee table and TV.
It is also possible to place a small bookcase or shelf behind the sofa. Such a living corner allows you to economically use the space of a one-room apartment.
When there is only one permanent resident in the apartment, the sleeping area in the niche can be moved to the second tier. The lower space will be removed for a desk, a wardrobe sector, or a reading area, with shelves for books and a comfortable rattan chair (the best way to use the lower space depends on the size of the one-room apartment, the location in the niche and the preferences of the residents). Such a niche arrangement is suitable near the side wall of the room (without a window). It will be beautiful to equip such a relaxation area with a sliding door in the Japanese style - "shoji".
Each technical and interior solution has its pros and cons. The first option with a niche-wall will have the advantage of originality, modern design, the ability to choose various curves, steps, semicircles on the walls, smooth or broken lines in the niche itself.
Playing with light will give the atmosphere an intimate feel in the evenings. Wallpapering with photo wallpaper or a regular pattern is possible. All sorts of accents in the niche-wall on vases, patterns, decorative items, etc. The disadvantages include:
- the folding bed will have to be removed and unfolded every day (while the bed linen will constantly get bunched up);
- the load on the folding mechanism will require special attention;
- when arranging a pattern or decor on the bottom of the bed, it will collect a lot of dust (which entails frequent cleaning of the apartment);
- installation of a canopy is difficult (for those who love coziness and privacy).
The niche-podium option is more common, cheaper and not much inferior to its predecessor (the niche-wall) in terms of interior design and functionality. Particular attention is paid to functionality, since this article considers the arrangement of a bed in a one-room apartment with the maximum benefit of the used space.
The ideal place to place a bed in such a niche is at the end of the room, near the wall with a window. When installing a bed on top of a podium (or in the middle of a podium), it is convenient to place the bed with its side facing the window, but not too close, since in cold weather there may be cooling from the window (and at the same time excessive heat from the radiator). In this case, it would be ideal to leave some space for a bedside table or just a small passage. This option is good for both one couple living in an apartment and a family with a child.
In addition to beauty, simplicity, convenience, the ability to place shelves, drawers, bookcases and storage cabinets, bedside tables (without losing “empty” space in niches), there are also enough opportunities for a design solution and separating the sleeping area from the main room space.
The latter is especially popular, as it creates an original design for the room, provides a separate place for parents from the child, divides the sleeping space, in which a completely different design is possible (more calm and gentle tones), different from the living room and recreation area. A canopy or curtain is hung on the border of the podium.
Just like in the version with a bed on the second tier, the sliding wall "shoji" will create a pleasant atmosphere of Japanese style. The sliding wall will eliminate extraneous noises (if any), extraneous smells from the kitchen (especially if the apartment is inhabited by lovers of an afternoon siesta and reading books).
Shoji style blinds can be installed on the window; this will reduce cold air flow in winter, block the light from headlights of passing cars, and will create additional darkening in the room during the day.
When placing a roll-out bed in a niche on wheels at the end of the podium, the possibility of zoning the sleeping area disappears. This arrangement is not suitable for lovers of privacy. On the podium above the bed, you can arrange a recreation area with a TV, upholstered furniture and a bookcase. This sector can also be delimited by a sliding door. The main disadvantage here is the dubious comfort, since the bed rolls out almost to the middle of the room.
Important! The wheels will leave marks on the floor, so you should put a carpet on the floor under them, or make another folding device. (A version of guides with folding legs is possible. This will require a lot of effort when transforming).
Such a bed, in addition to a cozy corner located on a podium, can be equipped in a niche with an automatic self-retracting electric drive.
Material
This section is written for home craftsmen who want to make a niche themselves from the raw materials at hand or from the remains of former luxury at a friend's dacha. To make a niche for a bed, you will need the following materials.
- For a board or slat for a frame in a floor niche, pine and spruce are best suited (when buying in a store, the price is not very high, and if you have old furniture or used pallets and simple operations, you can make slats for the frame yourself). The thickness of the slats in 25-30 mm will be quite enough.
Boards, beams, slats for the frame with your own hands - Depending on the purpose of the niche (decorative wall, cabinet with shelves, space in the wall or space for a bed) - plasterboard, plywood, chipboard, solid wood.
When making a decorative wall niche from plasterboard, smooth lines and curves in the niche are achieved by bending the plasterboard sheets. For small radii, bending "dry" is possible, but it is better to pre-wet the sheets and give them the required shape.
The templates are made in advance before the start of bending and installation of the bed in the niche, so as not to allow the already wet sheet to settle. The sheets are fixed to the template with clamps or available devices until completely dry.
For large radii, the wetted plasterboard sheet is pricked with an awl or a special roller with needles from the inside of the circle. It is also possible to cut from the back side for extreme bends.
Important! When selecting the radius, do not forget to take into account the thickness of the sheet (i.e. the final radius of the curved sheet is equal to the sum of the sheet thickness and the radius of the pattern).
Depending on the method of fastening - carpentry joints or joints "on metal" - you will need glue or hardware with corners. Painting supplies and paints, as well as wallpaper, adhesives.
