Provence style bed: what is it and how is it made
A bed in the Provence style is the central element of the bedroom composition. Its design, material and color determine the selection of the rest of the furniture and dictate the color scheme of the room.
Such a bed always has a large headboard and can be decorated with:
- wood carving;
- turned pilasters;
- overhead decorative elements;
- openwork forged details;
- with curved legs.
The mattress is placed on a strong, massive frame reinforced with beams. The legs of such beds are quite high, which allows for easy wet cleaning.
Types of beds in Provence style
A bed in the Provence style must be large and made of high-quality natural materials, and the rest of the bedroom furniture must match it.
Depending on the material, there are only 2 types of such beds:
- from solid wood - usually pine, birch, ash, oak wood is used;
- made of metal – openwork forged patterns create the airiness effect characteristic of the style.
The wood of the headboard has a natural shade or is painted with light colors. Two-layer painting with the creation of artificial abrasions or noble aging with the help of patinas is often practiced.
The headboard can be finished with quilted fabric (usually velour or velvet) or decorated with elegant carvings. To attach the canopy, the structure can be supplemented with high pilasters of complex shape.
Forged metal beds are often used to decorate a child's bedroom. Openwork curls of metal, painted milky, soft pink or light blue colors make the bed of a young princess or little prince truly fabulous.
Advantages and disadvantages of beds in the Provence style
In addition to the undoubted French charm, Provence style beds have many other advantages:
- strength;
- durability;
- maximum comfort;
- possibility of attaching a canopy.
There is probably only one drawback: a Provence style bed is a rather bulky and heavy piece of furniture. It will definitely not save space, so this option is not suitable for a small bedroom.
But in a spacious room such furniture looks great. A bed made of natural wood can become a family treasure and be passed down from generation to generation. Bedside tables, chests of drawers or console tables are often used as an addition - also made of solid wood, with vases with fresh flowers, photo frames and antique-style boxes placed on them.
At the foot of the room there is often a stylish pouf, bench or large chest: this style-forming feature makes the interior especially elegant and expressive.
How to choose the right bed in Provence style
Before choosing a bed, the room should be carefully measured, taking into account the dimensions of all the furniture that is there: for any bedroom, plenty of air and freedom of movement are important. In a cluttered room, it is difficult to create conditions for a good rest.
When choosing a bed, you need to pay attention to its length: it should correspond to your height plus at least 10 cm.
It's easy to check if the bed is wide enough: lie down on it, put your hands behind your head and spread your elbows. If there's enough space, the bed is suitable.
Bedroom furniture in the Provence style can be of non-standard shape: the more unusual the bed, the more likely it is that you will have to sew the bed linen yourself or to order. Special attention should be paid to the selection of textiles for a bed in the Provence style. The style is distinguished by calm light colors. You will need fabrics in pastel colors - beige, ivory, bluish-gray, light olive, soft pink, lilac - plain, striped or with small unobtrusive floral prints. Trim with frills, ruffles, natural lace will create a romantic mood and support the chosen style. A bed in the Provence style can be decorated with a canopy, which is best made from the same fabric as the bedspread.
Choosing furniture and accessories for an exclusive bedroom in the French country style may require a lot of time and financial investment, but it is worth the effort to achieve a combination of quality, elegance and comfort.
