The kitchen is, figuratively speaking, the "face" of the hostess. You can judge her by how clean, cozy and tidy it is. Freshly washed curtains, flowers on the windows, neatly arranged dishes - these are her characteristics. However, the equipment of the room also determines whether it will be convenient to work here, whether it is pleasant to sit in the evening with a cup of tea.
To maintain cleanliness, the efforts of the housewife herself are not enough: even the most ardent guardians of kitchen cleanliness spill crumbs into the spaces between cabinets, the table and the wall, vegetable peelings fall, which are not always possible to remove and put away, dust accumulates, which can be eliminated by completely moving the kitchen set.
Understanding how important it is to maintain cleanliness in the kitchen without moving furniture or disturbing the interior of the room, experts have found a way to make the cleaning process easier by suggesting installing baseboards on the countertops.

What is it and how does it work?
Usually, when we talk about a baseboard, we imagine a long strip covering the edges of the floor covering, which hides imperfections and prevents dust and dirt from accumulating in the corners and edges of the room. A tabletop baseboard performs the same functions. Made in the form of a strip of various widths and materials, it will reliably cover the niche between the table and the wall and will not allow liquids to leak in, crumbs to fall on the floor, attracting hordes of cockroaches, or debris to accumulate on the floor behind the table.
In a number of kitchen units, especially those made from expensive materials, the plinth for the countertop is already included in the set and is made of the same material as the furniture, in the corresponding color and format. But even if it is not there, it will not be difficult to purchase such molding for the countertop.
Types of skirting boards
Today, the retail chain offers skirting boards of various characteristics:
- are made from various materials: plastic, ceramics, wood, stone or aluminum;
- can have different shapes and be triangular, flat or square;
- The width of the products varies.
Each type of skirting board has its own advantages and disadvantages, which are reflected in the table.
Product material | Pros | Cons |
Plastic | Inexpensive
Possibility to refine after installation with various decorative elements Resistant to chemical influences, corrosion, deformation | Fragility
Short-lived Tendency to fade when exposed to bright light |
Aluminum | Smart
Durable and long lasting Ease of installation Universal | More expensive than plastic |
Tree | Beautiful | Not cheap
Not resistant to moisture |
MDF planks | Lungs
Easy to install Resistant to moisture | Quite fragile |
Ceramics | Beautiful, elegant | Expensive |
Stone | Variety of color solutions
Practical, easy to care for | Very expensive
heavy |
Each material is good in its own way, and the decision on the choice of the baseboard, which is installed on the countertop, remains with the buyer. However, do not forget that the purchased piece of furniture should organically fit into the overall interior of the room, its color should not "hurt" the eye, and the material should match that from which the entire kitchen set is made.
Advantages and disadvantages
The aluminum tabletop plinth is indeed more expensive than the plastic one, but this fact should not be perceived as a disadvantage: its price is justified by its higher strength and durability. Otherwise, in addition to those already listed, one can note the solid advantages that aluminum plinths have:
- heat resistance;
- convenience and ease of maintenance;
- There are various modifications with replaceable color finishes;
- has different types of coatings: simple, relief, polished;
- You can purchase the molding alone or in a set with a colored tape, which is easily replaced;
- functional and decorative.
If the molding is not initially included in the kitchen furniture set, but the decision to install it has been made, when choosing a baseboard, you need to pay attention to the following factors:
- the profile must be selected in accordance with the color of the countertop;
- the material of the work surface and the baseboard must be identical;
- the molding can be the same color, as well as furniture fittings.
When choosing, not only the functional qualities are important, but also the aesthetics of the kitchen design, which will make it the warmest and coziest place, regardless of the area of the kitchen.
Installing a baseboard for a kitchen countertop
It is better if the installation of aluminum plinth on the tabletop is done by a consultant-designer. But if the home craftsman is confident in his abilities, you can install the molding yourself.
The main requirements for installing the plinth are neatness and tightness to the edge of the tabletop and the wall. If installed correctly, it will not only complement but also extend the table, expanding its useful area. In addition, if installed correctly, all the flaws in the furniture and walls will be hidden.
The shape of the skirting board should be selected in accordance with the dimensions of the room and the configuration of the kitchen unit.
Attention! It is necessary to take into account that the wider the gap between the wall and the tabletop, the wider the plinth itself should be, completely covering it.
Installation is carried out in the following order.
- It is necessary to check the composition of the product kit; it should include:
- base part;
- decorative finishing;
- straight and corner connections;
- fasteners.
- Measure the kitchen countertop and trim the baseboard to fit the dimensions obtained. You can use a fine-toothed saw for this.
We adjust the plinth to the required size for our countertop - Drill holes in the base of the skirting board to secure it to the wall.
We drill a hole and attach the base to the tabletop - Use a level to check that the base is positioned strictly horizontally.
- Use fasteners to connect the base part of the skirting board to the wall.
We connect the main parts of the baseboard - Don't forget to secure the special rubber seal that protects the tabletop from water and dirt.
Advice: Do not attach the base strip to the wall, as the countertop may shift during use and debris will fall into the gap.
The installation is complete, and if the work is done correctly, the kitchen will be in order and the room will be given an aesthetic, well-groomed appearance.
