Not every apartment has a spacious kitchen. But if you are lucky enough to live in a large apartment, and the kitchen is of considerable size, then it can be divided by a bar counter. This piece of furniture should be comfortable and multifunctional. It is also an essential attribute in studio kitchens, which are at the peak of fashion these days. They combine a kitchen, a bar and a living room. This visually enlarges the room, and the living space is used wisely. Such counters are also made in private houses.
And what is a bar counter without chairs? They can be both ordinary and special, but at the same time comfortable. Of course, the easiest way is to buy them in a store. But not everyone likes the range offered. And they are expensive. If you are a fan of unique and extraordinary things, do not be lazy and make such a chair yourself.

Many craftsmen make the interior items they need, including chairs, with their own hands, enjoying it. Try it too. You can make the drawings yourself or find them on the Internet. You can become a master of your craft in this specific area. And your hobby will turn into a profitable business. In addition, by making furniture with your own hands, you will please your relatives, friends, acquaintances, making something original for them. Your house or apartment will have a unique interior, and besides, you will significantly save your family budget.
So, let's try to make a bar stool with our own hands.
Deciding on the design and construction of a bar stool
First, you need to think about the height of the chairs. This directly depends on the size of the bar counter. Consider all the nuances - you should be comfortable sitting on the chairs. Design is also of great importance. The furniture should match the kitchen design and match other interior items.
When choosing a design, many factors are important:
- number of legs, the most reliable is four;
- height regulator;
- It is convenient if the chair has a footrest, a backrest and armrests (these parts of the chair are a must if the bar counter serves as a dining table);
- upholstery and the material they will be made of (this determines whether the chair will be of good quality or not).
Necessary materials
A variety of materials are used – metal, wood, plastic. Wood is best suited for a bar stool, namely such varieties as oak, beech or maple. Everything you need can be purchased at any hardware store. You can order materials from a workshop. We will need: solid wood paneling (sides) 25-30 mm, the approximate diameter of the solid wood for the seat is 360 mm; 50x50 mm beam (legs); wood glue, foam rubber, upholstery fabric. You may need impregnation or paint to cover the product and protect it from moisture.
Necessary tools
Before you start working, you need to stock up on the following tools:
- marking pencil,
- roulette,
- square,
- hacksaw,
- sandpaper,
- Leg fasteners,
- drill,
- drills 3 and 6 mm,
- glue,
- self-tapping screws (5x20, 5x30, 5x80),
- bit,
- hammer,
- screwdriver.
Manufacturing process: step-by-step instructions
To set the height of a bar stool, you need to measure the length from the bar counter to the floor. The distance from the seat to the counter should be 30-35 cm.
Before work, prepare drawings with exact dimensions. This will help to know the amount of material. At the initial stage, we collect all the necessary parts. We make markings on the blanks. Using a jigsaw, we cut a circle from the array, the diameter should be 360 mm - this is the upper part of the seat. Now it needs to be sanded with a machine. Then we cut out a smaller circle - 260 mm. It will be needed for assembly and attachment of the legs.
The seat can also be made square - at your discretion. To do this, take a wide sidebar or two or three boards 120 mm wide. To connect them, grind a tenon and groove in the end face. Glue the parts with wood glue or PVA for furniture, connect, then fix and leave until completely dry.
Let's start making the legs, we make them from a 50x50 mm beam. Be sure to ensure that the structure is in a vertical position. We plane the entire length with a plane so that the section at the bottom of the legs is 2.5x2.5 cm, and the place where they are attached to the seat is much thicker.
You will also need four so-called crossbars. This will help to significantly fix the structure and will become a support for the legs. A 2.5x2.5 beam is planed, a tenon is sawed in the end part. In the legs, a nest for the tenon is made. It is distributed at a height of approximately 30 cm from the floor. Lubricate the crossbars with glue, insert them into the nests and securely fasten. Let dry.
Now we assemble the bar stool. It is important not to allow gaps and cracks. Then, once the parts have been adjusted, we connect them. The sharpened corners of the tenons must be rounded.
- In the circle for fastening the legs, it is necessary to drill 2 holes 6-8 mm in diameter for each leg for dowels. They should be strung on them with difficulty. In addition to the legs, metal corners are attached with screws.
- A circle of a larger diameter is attached to the screws on the back side. Now we install the chair on a straight plane and adjust the legs.
- We thoroughly process the chair with a sanding machine, cover it with varnish or stain, preferably in several layers.
In some cases, backrests and armrests can be installed. The seat can be made soft if desired. Before covering the bar stools, foam rubber, batting, or a children's mattress made of coconut coir is used. The upholstery fabric should be of good quality. Leatherette will also work.
On the back of the seat we apply a layer of glue - furniture PVA or BF-88. We lubricate the filler, for example foam rubber, and the upholstery material with glue.
Press the foam firmly onto the seat and cover with upholstery. Fasten with a stapler first in the corners, then along the perimeter.
The final stage is decoration
The bar stools are ready. Now we start decorating. This is an interesting and exciting process. Having mastered this art, you can give a unique look not only to newly made furniture, but also to furniture that needs updating. There are several decorating methods. Let's get acquainted with some of them.
Decorating with fabric. First, you need to choose the type and color of the fabric. It should be durable. At the same time, you need to consider the overall interior of the kitchen. Take, for example, tapestry. In structure, it is 100 percent cotton and artificial fibers. It is quite strong and wear-resistant. Jacquard, microfiber, furniture silk are equally used - it is better suited for vintage furniture.
If you don't want to bother with reupholstery, just sew covers. This will update your interior.
Recently, designers have been preferring decoupage as the most advantageous technique in decorating. Everything is elementary. The surface is processed with sandpaper, covered with putty, painted. It is better to work with white water-based paint. Against this background, decoupage is more delightful than ever. Then they glue on decorations from special napkins. Or use floral and vintage pictures. The final stage is finishing painting and coating with acrylic varnish.
There are also simple methods that are widely used at home. The most common is painting. It is better to use spray paint. And a variety of colors will give the product an attractive look.
Decorating with jute rope by wrapping it around a bar stool will create a special warmth and coziness in your home..
Using these and other methods, you will create exclusive home furniture that will fully meet your wishes, where you will feel cozy and comfortable. Having created such an atmosphere, you will be happy to return home after a hard day at work.
