Why do you need a new furniture cover?
The cape acts as a protective barrier when faced with various types of dirt. Including if children are "in charge" of the house or there are pets.
Another important and integral function is interior design.
Where can I get a cover for my chairs?
You can acquire such a miracle protection by ordering a product from a studio, or by buying a ready-made product at a textile market.
The reasons for the third method are quite compelling:
- Independent selection of materials (colors and textures);
- The appropriate size of the removable cover;
- Selected design that meets requirements.
Preparation for sewing covers
Working on creating furniture “clothes” with your own hands requires certain preparation, which consists of several steps:
- Choice of material;
- Preparation of tools;
- Select design;
- Creating a pattern;
- Sewing a cover.
Selecting the material
The modern market is quite diverse in the choice of textile products. And even the most capricious housewives are able to find something to their liking.
And in order to sew a furniture cover for a sofa or a cover for a computer chair, the following alternatives will be optimal.
- Velours.
The material is quite soft with a velvety texture. However, unlike velvet, it is a more budget option. Due to the varied arrangement of the pile, it is combed, laid and smoothed in different ways.Depending on the type of production, velour can be smooth, embossed or patterned. The fabric is easy to care for. It has hypoallergenic properties. This type of material is wear-resistant, and stains are removed quite easily.
The fabric for the future cape should be chosen in accordance with the existing interior style. - Cotton.
It has an important quality - naturalness. As a result, the fabric belongs to the category of "breathing" and environmentally friendly fabrics.Since cotton is amenable to dyeing, covers made from this material are bright. The material is not durable due to the absence of artificial fiber in the composition. Also, after washing, cotton fabric shrinks.
The main criterion for choosing a cover for children's furniture is the eco-friendliness and hypoallergenicity of the fabric. - Flock.
Soft, delicate, but at the same time quite durable material, which makes it a worthy option for chair covers.The material does not deform, which means that even with long-term use, a bedspread made from this fabric can retain its original appearance.
This modern fabric is an analogue of velvet. Other advantages of flock include such qualities as ease of use and subsequent maintenance, water-repellent properties, and resistance to sunlight.
High-quality flock has a three-layer structure, which is quite resistant to wear and tear, stretching and has a large margin of safety.
If you want to sew a cover for a computer chair with your own hands, pay attention to chenille, jacquard, microfiber, Teflon flock.
Necessary tools
Having decided on the material, we prepare the necessary tools to create a chair cover with our own hands:
- Scissors;
- Pencil;
- Sewing machine;
- Needle;
- Measuring tape;
- Vacuum cleaner;

Tools and materials that will be useful to you in your work.
Selecting a design
Having prepared the necessary tools, the next step is to determine the design. There are several options for chair covers:
- Patchwork cape;
This fun and colorful patchwork chair cover will inspire you to take on a real DIY challenge. - Loft style cover;
Loft style chair covers can even be made from faux fur. - Shabby chic style cover;
Light-colored covers and a touch of antiquity are the hallmarks of upholstered furniture in the shabby chic style. - Case with frill and delicate print.
Covers with ruffles and frills, with a floral print will decorate the interior of any room.
Creating a pattern
It would seem that we have decided on the material, tools and design and the finished case is almost in our hands. But no. The most important and unresolved question remains, namely — taking measurements and creating a pattern.How to take accurate measurements? First, you need to find out the width-length-height of the seat, back, cushion, armrests and borders. You should also decide where exactly the seams will be located on the future cover. To avoid confusion later, all measurements should be written down.
It is important to remember about the fabric reserves, so for each fragment an allowance is made for darts and “pinches”. So for each element you can add about 15-20 cm for adjustment.
The attached patterns are attached to the fabric with pre-prepared safety pins. After that, they are carefully traced with a pencil, taking into account the allowances. The traced elements are cut out and ironed.All parts of the future cape are outlined in the same way and cut out.
For the armrests, two patterns are made, external and internal. Both fragments are joined together, after folding the fabric in half and marking the seam lines of the longitudinal thread in the center with a pencil or chalk. The lower edges of the fabric should overlap the intended frill seam by 1.3 cm.
The outer back and armrest pieces are folded with the edges facing outward. The seam lines are drawn. At the place of the outer drawn seam lines, the inner piece is connected to the outer piece. The inner pattern is made with a margin of about 18-20 cm on all sides. The lower edge of the piece is placed on the seat.
Next, you need to make a detail for the back and seat. Each fragment is attached to the furniture using pins.
Sewing a cover for a chair or sofa
The measurements have been taken, the removable cape diagram is ready. All that remains is a small matter — sewing a chair cover. If necessary, you can adjust the product using darts and folds.
Finally, the cover is sewn and placed on the furniture, which has been previously cleaned with a vacuum cleaner.
