The reasons for the third method are quite compelling:

  • Independent selection of materials (colors and textures);
  • The appropriate size of the removable cover;
  • Selected design that meets requirements.

Preparation for sewing covers

Working on creating furniture “clothes” with your own hands requires certain preparation, which consists of several steps:

  • Choice of material;
  • Preparation of tools;
  • Select design;
  • Creating a pattern;
  • Sewing a cover.

Even before you start working, you need to choose the type of future product.

Selecting the material

The modern market is quite diverse in the choice of textile products. And even the most capricious housewives are able to find something to their liking.

Bright chair covers will be a great color accent.

And in order to sew a furniture cover for a sofa or a cover for a computer chair, the following alternatives will be optimal.

  1. Velours.
    The material is quite soft with a velvety texture. However, unlike velvet, it is a more budget option. Due to the varied arrangement of the pile, it is combed, laid and smoothed in different ways.

    furniture velour
    Depending on the type of production, velour can be smooth, embossed or patterned.

    The fabric is easy to care for. It has hypoallergenic properties. This type of material is wear-resistant, and stains are removed quite easily.

    The fabric for the future cape should be chosen in accordance with the existing interior style.
  2. Cotton.
    It has an important quality - naturalness. As a result, the fabric belongs to the category of "breathing" and environmentally friendly fabrics.

    fabric cotton
    Since cotton is amenable to dyeing, covers made from this material are bright.

    The material is not durable due to the absence of artificial fiber in the composition. Also, after washing, cotton fabric shrinks.

    The main criterion for choosing a cover for children's furniture is the eco-friendliness and hypoallergenicity of the fabric.
  3. Flock.
    Soft, delicate, but at the same time quite durable material, which makes it a worthy option for chair covers.The material does not deform, which means that even with long-term use, a bedspread made from this fabric can retain its original appearance.

    flock material
    This modern fabric is an analogue of velvet.

    Other advantages of flock include such qualities as ease of use and subsequent maintenance, water-repellent properties, and resistance to sunlight.

Creating a pattern

It would seem that we have decided on the material, tools and design and the finished case is almost in our hands. But no. The most important and unresolved question remains, namely taking measurements and creating a pattern.How to take accurate measurements? First, you need to find out the width-length-height of the seat, back, cushion, armrests and borders. You should also decide where exactly the seams will be located on the future cover. To avoid confusion later, all measurements should be written down.

take measurements
Correctly taken measurements are the key to successful work on sewing a cover, both for a computer chair and a regular one.

It is important to remember about the fabric reserves, so for each fragment an allowance is made for darts and “pinches”. So for each element you can add about 15-20 cm for adjustment.

cover patterns
The prepared and cut out paper pattern is placed on the fabric in such a way that there is as little waste as possible.

The attached patterns are attached to the fabric with pre-prepared safety pins. After that, they are carefully traced with a pencil, taking into account the allowances. The traced elements are cut out and ironed.All parts of the future cape are outlined in the same way and cut out.

Pattern for the back of the chair.

For the armrests, two patterns are made, external and internal. Both fragments are joined together, after folding the fabric in half and marking the seam lines of the longitudinal thread in the center with a pencil or chalk. The lower edges of the fabric should overlap the intended frill seam by 1.3 cm.

Pattern for the armrest (first option – with folds)

The outer back and armrest pieces are folded with the edges facing outward. The seam lines are drawn. At the place of the outer drawn seam lines, the inner piece is connected to the outer piece. The inner pattern is made with a margin of about 18-20 cm on all sides. The lower edge of the piece is placed on the seat.
