How to sew a pillow with your own hands?

It is very easy to sew a decorative pillow yourself. You don’t need any special knowledge in the field of sewing. It is enough to be able to make even lines on a sewing machine. But there are several nuances without which you will not be able to create beautiful pillows with your own hands.

  1. Fabrics

Any model of sofa decor includes two layers of fabric. The first is internal, made of durable fabric. The second is external, used to decorate the pillowcase from the outside. Basic requirements for the material:

  • Easy to clean or wash.
  • Wear resistance.
  • Not too rough texture.

As for the design, it should match the color scheme and style of the room.

  1. Pattern

To begin with, it is better to take a classic rectangular shape. Having practiced on it, you can improve your skills and make products of more complex configurations. The pattern can be made on Whatman paper. To do this, you need to draw a rectangle measuring 50 x 50 cm. Then add 2 cm of seam allowance on each side of the rectangle and cut out the blank from paper. After this, the pattern is transferred to the fabric. 4 parts are cut out: 2 from cotton for the inner cover and 2 from fabric for the outer part.

  1. Sewing

The rectangle is easy to sew: you need to make three even lines on the sides of the back side, then turn it inside out. Leave the fourth side without a line so that you can insert the filler. After the product is sewn, it is turned inside out. The inner part is stuffed with filler and the question arises: how to close the remaining seam? There are several solutions to the problem:

  • Zipper. Sewn before stuffing. Allows easy removal of the cover for washing, but may cause discomfort during rest due to metal elements.
  • Textile piping, lace or binding. "Masking" tape is sewn over all seams, including the last one.
  • Unfinished edge. The most versatile option. It is done simply: when all the seams are ready, the last one is also stitched, but 2-3 cm short of the end. The resulting slit is filled with stuffing. Then the hole is closed with an invisible seam and masked with a decorative element, for example, a pompom.
  1. Stuffing

The best materials for filling are considered to be holofiber and synthetic fluff. Both are made of the finest polyester fibers. But holofiber is produced in the form of sheets and is used where it is necessary to create an unusual shape: a cloud, an animal figure, an alphabet. Synthetic fluff is soft synthetic granules. The main advantage of both materials is that ticks and other microorganisms do not start in them, the filling is easy to care for, it is easy to wash in a machine.

There is another wonderful stuffing material for children's models - silicone granules. They are easy to fill the inside of the product, and they are also easy to pour out if you need to wash the cover.

The external design is done using various handcraft techniques, which are chosen to match the room.

Embroidery decoration

Cross stitch

The design decorated with embroidery looks exquisite and elegant. For this option, various embroidery techniques are used.

  • Smooth surface.
  • Cross.
  • Beadwork.
  • Volumetric embroidery with ribbons or batik.

The three-dimensional embroidered picture looks very impressive. But because of the convex elements, it is not very comfortable to rest on it. And the manual labor invested in the design does not deserve simple everyday use. It is better to leave the embroidered "3D-thoughts" for decoration and to enliven the atmosphere of the home.

Fur

Fur has become the number one texture in fashion and design. It has appeared on phone cases, notebooks, sandals and even light blouses. The fashion trend has not passed by stylish textiles. Fluffy pillowcases made of fur are in fashion now. However, it is not at all necessary to sew the product yourself. It is enough to just buy a fur case according to the size of your thoughts and put improvised "fur coats" on them. If you want to create your own design, you can use the sewing master class described above. Only to sew the top pillowcase you need to take a piece of fur.

Felt

Another popular material in modern textiles is felt. Its soft texture, pliability and variety of colors allow sewing dumkas of the most unimaginable configurations. Felt is used to make applique elements and decorate the fabric or to use the material for sewing pillowcases for dumkas.

Pillow toys for children

Kids can be offered thought toys in the form of letters, numbers, puzzles, all sorts of animals. Such a model is more fun than a full-fledged pillow. It is not recommended to sleep on figured poufs. Children's skeletons are just forming, so they need standard bedding for rest. But the following options are quite suitable for games and learning.

  • A thought-toy "Owl", which is sewn according to a standard pattern in the form of a "wise bird". It is filled with polystyrene granules so that the child develops hand motor skills and tactile sensations.

Care tips

Since the dumki consist of two parts: an internal filling and an external cover, washing is carried out in two stages.

  1. Washing the inner part with filler

It is better to load several thoughts into the machine, wrapping each in a special net. This way the drum will be loaded evenly and the quality of washing will improve. The water temperature does not exceed 50⁰С, gel is used for washing. Rinse - double. To remove stains, you should use not bleach, but a stain remover. Drying should take place in the sun or in a room with good air circulation. Dry the product in a horizontal position, turning it over from time to time and fluffing the filler.

  1. Washing the outer cover

The pillowcase is soaked in warm water with a soft powder. Then it is washed in the machine on a delicate cycle and dried. If there are decorative elements on the surface, it is advisable to replace the machine wash with hand wash or take the product to a dry cleaner.
