A pillow is an essential attribute of night sleep, daytime rest, as well as interior decor of a bedroom, living room, or nursery. An original, soft, and warm pillow knitted with your own hands gives the room the coziness of a home, makes the home comfortable, and warms even in the winter cold.

What are covers for?
The main difference between a textile pillowcase and a knitted cover is that the latter element has a predominantly decorative purpose. It creates a single ensemble, including a pillowcase, a bedspread, and other textile items that match in color and style.
The covers are designed so that pillows used not for sleeping can be used as sofa or floor pillows - decorating the interior of the room. The knitted accessory will protect the item from abrasion, creating coziness in the room. It is desirable that the cover has a zipper, buttons - then it will be convenient to remove it for washing.
How to knit a pillow with your own hands
It is easy to knit a pillow yourself - you just need 200-400 grams of yarn of the appropriate color, knitting needles or a hook of the appropriate thickness, a little patience and imagination. Beginner knitters should choose the easiest model of pillow with knitting needles.
To determine the knitting density, it is recommended to make a small piece - approximately 10 by 10 cm, then use a ruler to measure how many loops, rows, there are per cm, in order to know how many loops to cast on.
Tip: You can knit only the top square part of the cover and sew the bottom part from fabric or knit a long rectangle that you can wrap around the existing product.
Knitted Cushion Cover Ideas
The easiest and fastest way to knit a pillow is with a stocking stitch, garter stitch or regular elastic. A product with a checkerboard pattern looks a little more interesting, each cell of which is four loops wide and four rows high. A cover with buttons is made like this: first, a rectangle is knitted, large enough to wrap the pillow, but the last 8-10 rows are done with a loose elastic "one by one". The finished model is simply fastened with buttons.
A pillow with relief "bumps" is no less an interesting idea. To make a "bump" from one loop, make three, then turn the work twice, knit face loops on the "front" side, and purl loops on the back. After 4 rows, the extra loops are again reduced, knitted with one, the "bumps" are evenly distributed over the entire surface. A simple relief is obtained from braids knitted with face loops. The optimal width of such a "braid" is 6-8 loops, the length of each "link" is 10-12 rows.
A product with an openwork pattern looks very original. An example is "zigzag", a description of its rapport:
- the number of loops dialed is a multiple of nine;
- Rows 1-4 are knitted;
- 5th – all front loops: 2 together, 2 knit as usual, 7 are knitted from one, 2 regular, 2 together;
- 6th, 8th, 10th row – all purl;
- 7th row – all knits: 2 together, 9 regular, 2 together;
- 9th row – only knits: 2 together, 7 regular, 2 together;
- then the pattern is repeated until the end of the product.
Openwork includes "leaves", which is how a strip of leaves is made, located in the middle or on the edge of the pillow:
- rapport – 25 loops, even rows are knitted with purl loops;
- 1st row – 1-5 – front, 2 knitted as one, front, 2 as one, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17 – front, 10, 12, 14, 16 – yarn over, 2 knitted as one, front, two as one, 21-25 – front;
- 3rd row – 1-4 – front, 2 are knitted as one, front, 2 as one, 8, 10, 12-14, 16, 18 – front, 9, 11, 15, 17 – yarn over, 2 are knitted as one, front, two as one, 22-25 – front;
- 5th row – 1-3 – front, 2 are knitted as one, front, 2 as one, 7, 9, 11-15, 17, 19 – front, 8, 10, 16, 18 – yarn over, 2 are knitted as one, front, two as one, 23-25 – front;
- 7th row – 1-2 – front, 2 are knitted as one, front, 2 as one, 6, 8, 10-16, 18, 20 – front, 7, 9, 17, 19 – yarn over, 2 are knitted as one, front, two as one, 24-25 – front.
Tip: If you plan to sleep on the pillow, the cover should not be prickly. The best material for this is acrylic yarn with a small addition of other fibers.
Pumpkin pillow
An interesting option suitable for a child's room is a pumpkin floor pillow made on five knitting needles. Depending on the size, you will need 200-500 grams of orange yarn and a little green. First, you need to cast on 8 loops with green threads, close them in a circle, distribute them on 4 knitting needles, and knit 10 rows.
From rows 11 to 20, gradually add loops to make a circle, then break the green thread and continue knitting with orange thread until the pillow reaches the desired diameter. The next 15-20 cm are knitted without increases, after which the loops are gradually reduced. To give the pumpkin a realistic shape, it is tightened - the pillow is divided into 8 "slices" with a strong thread in the same color as the pumpkin.
A round pillow with knitting needles for the floor is created in approximately the same way, except for the constrictions. The product has a diameter of about one meter, a height of 50 cm. It is knitted with an elastic band, a stocking stitch, or any other pattern. For work, you will need 900-1000 grams of yarn, knitting needles no thinner than number 10, a sufficient amount of filler (foam rubber, synthetic padding) - the pouf should come out quite dense, a knitted pillowcase bag.
Tip: You can make a “warty” pumpkin, decorating it with “cones”, knitted leaves, ladybugs.
Coloured pillows
The pillows can be decorated with colored patterns - stripes, geometric figures, flowers, whole pictures. To make any desired colored drawing, you can open the photo you like in the Paint program, enlarge it to the desired size, select suitable threads and start knitting. Each cell here represents a separate loop.
Knitting a pillow with knitting needles is no more difficult than crocheting. The latter tool is easiest to use for knitting round pillows. A two-color black and white pillow with a checkerboard pattern is made like this:
- even rows are knitted with white threads, odd rows - with black threads;
- a chain of three loops is closed into a ring, into which 6 loops are knitted with single crochets;
- in the next row the number of loops doubles – they are made with double crochets;
- in the third row, three double crochets are knitted into the first loop, the second is skipped, three double crochets are knitted into the third, the fourth is skipped, etc.;
- in the fourth row, three columns are knitted from the loop located above the one that was skipped in the previous row, then one chain stitch is knitted, three columns from the “empty” space, a chain stitch, etc.;
- in subsequent rows, the number of air loops and columns increases, but so that the product has the appearance of a slightly convex circle;
- You need to knit two identical halves, which will later be connected with single crochets.
The pillow can be “assembled” from pre-knitted multi-colored pieces – squares, triangles, flowers, both identical and different.
Tip: The finished pillow is decorated with crocheted lace along the contour, flowers or bows, also crocheted.
Conclusion
Knitting pillows with knitting needles, using one or many colors, acrylic or any other yarn, is not at all difficult when you have detailed patterns and descriptions of the work at hand.
