Shelf designs
You always want to decorate the empty wall and its niches with something, especially the space above the bed or next to its headboard, which is often empty. Perhaps it will be a painting, a photograph, a mirror or a simple shelf, which in addition to aesthetic functions will bring a lot of benefits.
According to design features, the following types are distinguished.
- Pendant lights are one of the most common and traditional, their designs can be very diverse. You can use both single copies and combine them with each other.
- Shelves. They are lightweight and mobile and can be used as bedside tables.
- Shelves. Their use is limited by their large dimensions. They are suitable only for bedrooms with a large area.
- Shelves in niches. Using the horizontal plane of a niche as a shelf has long become a classic.
By and large, it doesn’t matter what type your shelf will be, the main thing is that it fulfills its main function: design, the shelf should fit into the bedroom interior, be a part of it.
Choice of color and material
The color of the shelf should match the interior of the room. Not fall out of the general color scheme, but, on the contrary, match it. It is possible to use colors in this way, for example, if the room is dominated by light colors (white, beige, sky-blue, etc.), then the shelf should be approximately the same color.
An exception would be the use of contrasting colors in the bedroom design, when light walls contrast with a darker bed and bedside tables, then the color of the shelf is matched to the furniture. This is done in the classic bedroom design. Sometimes, they do it so that the shelves merge with the wall in color, and it seems as if the objects standing on it are hanging in the air.
Sometimes shelves are specially highlighted in color from the overall interior; this technique is mainly used when arranging children's rooms next to the bed.
The material used to make shelves, racks and bookcases is very diverse. It can be solid wood, fiberboard, chipboard, laminated chipboard, plywood, metal, glass and many others.
But, of course, the most common is laminated chipboard. This is due to the price. A relatively inexpensive material with a wide range of colors. An equally convenient material for a shelf is solid wood. With such qualities as ease of processing and wide availability, wood has always been used to make furniture.
Where is the best place to hang a shelf in the bedroom?
It is convenient to use small shelves at the head of the bed, or hang shelves above the bed, at arm's length from the person lying down.
If there is a niche in the room, you can use the volume of its recess to fill it with a rack or install a bed in the niche and hang several structures above its headboard. On the open wall above the table, shelves will not only look beautiful, but will also be useful.
Advantages and disadvantages
Before you run to the store to buy a new shelf or grab the tools to make one yourself, you need to know all the advantages and disadvantages of such furniture.
Pros
- Ability to change appearance. Some shelves sold in stores have the ability to change their location relative to each other.
- Thanks to the open design, shelves are a great option for visually unloading space. Or vice versa.
- Possibility of use in places with weak walls. It is difficult to hang a closed wall cabinet on a plasterboard wall due to its large weight.
- Quick access to shelf contents.
Cons
- The main drawback: dust. It settles in large quantities on the surface of an open shelf. In the fight against this, there is only one way out: wet cleaning, especially carefully you need to clean the shelves above the bed.
- Possibility of objects falling. This is especially dangerous when placing shelves above the bed and next to the headboard.
- Not everything can be put on the shelf: personal belongings, underwear, documents, etc.
