A hanging shelf for glasses is both a functional holder for the kitchen or bar and a decorative element.
The practical purpose of a glass hanger is to protect the surface of glassware from stains, fingerprints, and everything that can happen to fragile glasses if stored incorrectly. Such a system also helps out in case of a lack of space in the room.
As a decorative element, a hanging shelf can complement the interior of a kitchen or bar area, and if properly designed, it can even serve as its key element.

What types of shelves for wine glasses are there?
There are several main types of glass storage systems.
- Shelves for glasses on the bar counter.
According to the type of fastening, they are divided into the following types:
Central type shelves. In the middle they have a hole for fastening to a pipe, on the sides – recesses for stemware legs.
Rotating shelves. They can be rotated around their axis using a special fastener. If necessary, such a shelf can always be moved aside. They can be round, conical or hanger-shaped.
Important! Sometimes any glass storage systems, including shelves, are mistakenly called rails.
A railing (from the English word railing – handrails) is a pipe or a slat with fastenings that allow you to store glassware. It is usually attached to the wall or at the bottom of cabinets. A bar pipe is also a railing. But calling a regular tabletop glass dryer or a shelf where glasses stand like that would be a gross mistake.
- Glass holders with fastening to open furniture shelves
If there is no bar counter with a pipe mount, the solution may be to store wine glasses by attaching them to an open furniture shelf. Various hooks or hangers are used for this. A hanging glass dryer looks spectacular with lighting.
For a loft-style interior (a more correct name is “neo-loft” or “industrial style”), a handmade shelf covered with dark varnish and with chrome fasteners will work well. For a vintage-style design, a carved shelf with hooks and pendants in copper or gold is suitable.
- Suspended railing systems with ceiling mounting
This option is not very common. It is a horizontal railing fastened directly to the ceiling, using two or four vertical supports. But the downside of this method is its low functionality and inconvenience when storing glasses. It is used rather as a decorative element. A ceiling system in the form of a grid on brackets, to which hooks are attached, is more practical. But it cannot be called a railing.
Accessories for roof rails
The railing itself looks somewhat like a regular curtain rod.
But the following accessories give it a finished look:
- Plugs - they are attached to both sides of the pipe or rail. If the railing runs along the walls and there is a gap in the corner area (the railing rails are not connected at an angle of 90 degrees), plugs must be installed, otherwise the structure will look unfinished.
- Brackets-holders.
- Glass mounts are the main functional part of the railing. Mounts can be of different types. For horizontal railings, these are most often hooks or hangers. In central and rotary structures, with a vertically standing pipe on the bar counter, this is a round stand with holes for glasses.
- Additional accessories – shelves, nets, dryers.
What are wine glass hangers made of?
Currently, the choice of materials for the manufacture of railings is very wide. Below are their main types.
Stainless steel. This is the optimal material for a wine glass storage system. It is resistant to all detergents and cleaning agents and is not affected by moisture.
Plastic. Plastic rails are inexpensive because the material itself is cheap. However, they cannot withstand much weight.
Aluminum and brass. Lighter than stainless steel, but have a shorter service life.
Attention! Aluminum slats cannot be pulled over a long length. They must be divided into sections, otherwise the railing will deform. Therefore, this option is not suitable for large areas.
Wood. Wooden rails serve as a decorative element in interiors in the Provence, vintage, country style. If they are covered with high-quality varnish, they can last a long time. Most often, wood is used in ceiling systems.
Glass, usually impact-resistant. Such holders look especially good if made of colored glass, and have high-tech lighting installed inside.
Glass Holder Covers
Various types of coatings are used for holders. Their main purpose is to protect and extend the durability of the material from which the rails are made. However, they also have a decorative function. You can choose a suspension system with a coating that will fit most harmoniously into the interior.
Chrome. The most common type of holder is a shiny chrome finish. These finishes are easy to clean and wash because of their smooth surface.
Aluminum. Aluminum pipes look good in a bar or kitchen in the "Luft" style. There are wine glass holders made in the form of water pipes. They are usually made to order.
Bronze. An economy option is when bronze spraying is done on pipes or rails made of ordinary black metal. But you shouldn't save money like this, since the coating performs a protective function, and when exposed to water, rust will appear on the holder. It is better to choose imitation bronze on stainless steel. Rails with bronze coating are suitable for rooms in a classic style or in the Provence style.
Gold. Such pipes, as well as those made "under bronze", are subject to scratches. It is best to order or buy rails covered with matte gold plating, or with imitation of abrasions and scratches. So the damage, if it appears, will not be conspicuous. Such holders are not recommended if you need to decorate a room in the Provence, high-tech or loft style. There they will look ridiculous and out of place.
Satin. Unlike chrome, satin finish is more matte. Simply put, chrome simply reflects other surfaces, having no color of its own. Satin finish is usually gray. If you look at it under a microscope, you will see micro-scratches made in one direction on such a finish. This serves to create a matte finish that will not shine as much as chrome.
Popular manufacturers of wine glass dryers
The cheapest hanging systems for storing wine glasses are usually made in China. They are inexpensive, but will not last long. As a rule, the coating is applied to ordinary ferrous metal or plastic.
German manufacturers. Among them, the most famous is the Kessebohmer company, which has been producing kitchen accessories since 1957. The holders produced by it are the most expensive on the mass market, but at the same time the highest quality and most durable. The coating is applied to them by galvanic method, which gives greater adhesion to the base than spraying.
Italian companies Eureca and Lemi. They offer a wide range of holders with gold, bronze or brass coating. For example, Lemi has a whole collection of rails with brass coating. However, the coating is applied by simple spraying.
Czech company Tescoma. Its products are not inferior in quality to Italian ones.
