A sliding wardrobe is more than just a wardrobe with shelves, almost a closet. Sometimes sliding doors close the entrance to a storage room with numerous compartments for clothes, things, storage of canned goods.

The advantages of designing a do-it-yourself wardrobe become apparent to those who imagine what they need from a new piece of furniture. Standard wardrobes are almost identical in stores, they are diverse, but they cannot take into account the nuances associated with your apartment, things and preferences. A niche in the wall that you want to completely close with a wardrobe, or fence off a storage room with it. Or make a wardrobe across the entire wall so that there are no unsightly cracks where dust will constantly clog. And the shelves? More or less, suitable specifically for standard boxes or jars.
School geometry alone, even with a good grade, will not be enough. If you have never done renovations, it will be difficult to imagine three-dimensional pictures of what the future interior will look like. This is normal. Drawing comes to the rescue. Take a piece of paper, a pen and draw with a pencil in a certain proportion your room, the corner where the closet should be, the shelves you want to make there. Take a tape measure and look at what a 30-centimeter shelf actually looks like, and draw conclusions.
Making a project is not as easy as it seems. How to calculate the cut of chipboard for a wardrobe so that all the doors open, all the drawers slide out, so that the structure does not collapse under its own gravity? Then you would have to start all over again. Designing a sliding wardrobe with your own hands is not an easy task, you need to take into account the little things that can create big problems.

What you must consider when designing a sliding wardrobe
- Door width – do not make drawers wider than the door opens, otherwise it will be impossible to pull out the drawer.
- The useful depth of the cabinet is 10 centimeters less than the actual depth; this space is taken up by the doors.
- 2- and 3-door wardrobes can only be opened by one section, 4-door wardrobes – by two. That is, the number of sections must match the number of doors, otherwise it will be impossible to get inside.
- There are so-called dead zones in cabinets - places where you can't put drawers, that's where either the right edge of the left door is, or the left edge of the right door is. It's also worth considering the presence of guides.
- Shelves that are too long (more than half a meter) may sag; it is better to install a stand under them.
- For the same reason, when designing a wardrobe with a solid roof, it is worth installing partitions.
- Cabinet doors should be the same width to provide maximum opening width. Exception: when the middle door in a 3-door cabinet is twice as wide as the others.
- When designing drawers in a sliding wardrobe, it is worth considering that a protruding handle may stick out and interfere with the movement of the door, which should be avoided.
- Each sliding door must be fitted with stoppers - this is convenient to use and prevents the doors from opening or closing spontaneously.
Stages of designing cabinet furniture
Preliminary work – we need to understand what we want. A built-in wardrobe or a regular one, what size, how many doors. For example, the optimal depth of a wardrobe is 60 cm, if it is less, you will not be able to conveniently place hangers.
A draft design is a calculation of the dimensions, drawing the desired closet on paper to understand what exactly should be the result. The number of shelves and what sizes, what will be stored in this closet. How will things be stored - hung on hangers or folded on shelves? What kind of shelves should be made - narrower so that nothing falls out, or are you planning to use boxes?
A technical project in a special program, where all the dimensions and details are thoroughly specified, right down to the type and color of the fittings. Yes, you will have to download, install and master new software, find video tutorials on them and spend several hours learning. However, the result will be worth it - in the future you will be able to save a lot of time.
The order of designing a sliding wardrobe
- We take the necessary measurements.
- We take into account 10 cm of the depth on the door and 5 cm of the height on the plinth – the distance between the floor of the room and the floor of the closet.
- It is better to make cabinet doors to order - this is due to both the large number of fittings and the high precision of the work that needs to be done to assemble them.
- We think over the contents of the sliding wardrobe. It is important to look at standard models of wardrobes to understand their convenience, versatility and thoughtfulness, and only then, based on this, think about what will suit you best. Often, small shelves are made on the sides, a long mezzanine on top, as well as shelves in the lower part of the wardrobe. The middle is intended for hanging clothes.
Review of computer programs-assistants in furniture production
Technical design is now almost never drawn on paper - it is long, complicated and carries a high risk of errors. Yes, mastering the program seems difficult, but it is worth it, and all specialists know how to work in the most optimal program in their opinion. And customers just need to draw the desired project together with the manager and wait until a new wardrobe appears in their apartment: beautiful, convenient and functional.
- Pro100 is a simple and clear visual program for designing furniture and composing interiors. It helps in design due to volumetric visualization of the image. It contains many ready-made modules for composing them into a single whole, like a constructor, but according to your sizes, combinations and colors. A sliding wardrobe in such a program will look very elegant and tempting.
- The Woody program is more suitable for furniture design than for interior design. A large catalog of parts and fittings helps automate the process of creating furniture with your own hands, the name ("wood" is translated as "tree") means that the furniture is planned to be wooden or made of laminated chipboard, like a sliding wardrobe.
- Astra Furniture Designer is relatively simple and easy to use, and is a great help to custom furniture manufacturers. There is no beautiful visualization here, but the program performs its function – assistance in design – perfectly. It is well suited for designing a sliding wardrobe.
- The T-FLEX Furniture program designs furniture of any complexity. Includes two types of work: creating a room and composing wardrobes together with the customer, and a direct furniture designer to create a unique product according to an individual order.
Designing a wardrobe is not an easy task, but if you approach the matter wisely, then the furniture made by your own hands will be as convenient as possible for you and ideally suited to a particular room.
