Roller blinds: what is it
Roller blinds are fabric panels that roll up completely or at a certain level into a roll using a mechanism. There are many options for mechanisms, as well as fabrics. The simplest type of roller blinds consists of a shaft, chains and a panel, to the bottom of which a bar is attached. Due to the chains, you can control the mechanism with one hand - lower and raise the blind. The bar, fixed at the bottom of the panel, serves for uniform, without drops, regulation of the roller blind fabric material.
Please note! At first glance, roller blinds resemble blinds. However, their appearance is much more attractive, and the mechanism can completely or partially darken the room.
Functional capabilities
Roller blinds are characterized by open or closed fastening systems:
- open - this is a curtain with a bar at the bottom, which is rolled up onto a shaft attached to the window frame or its opening; the strings are used for opening and closing;
- closed - this is a curtain with side (usually two) guides, hidden in a special box, which is located on top of the shaft.
Additional information. To control roller blinds, many manufacturers offer not only a chain, but also a remote option, which involves a remote control and sensors built into the mechanism.
In addition to the fastening systems, roller blinds act as a special decorative element in the interior and perform a number of protective functions:
- protection from natural sunlight, both partial and complete;
- hiding the room from outside intrusion, which is especially important for the first floor;
- creating an air gap between the window pane and the room.
Please note! The denser the material of the canvas, the better the roller blinds do at keeping out cold air in winter. In summer, they prevent bright and hot rays of the sun from getting in.
Types of roller blinds
Today, the textile industry offers many variations of roller blinds. Each type has its own characteristics. However, regardless of the distinctive characteristics, they all last a long time, are easy to maintain, do not accumulate dust, are antistatic and fireproof. Below are the main types of roller blinds.
Mini-rollers and cassette blinds
Mini and cassette roller blinds are the most popular of all types. Mini roller blinds are an ergonomic, small-sized design that covers only glass.
There are several options for installing such roller blinds.
- By drilling. As a rule, a wall or ceiling around the window opening is selected for fastening. To fasten the brackets, markings are made, holes are drilled, screws are inserted, with the help of which the holders are screwed. Afterwards, a pipe is installed in the fixed brackets, onto which, by pressing, the covers are inserted into the holes.
- Using simple adhesive tape. The ideal method for attaching the structure to plastic window frames. To do this, degrease the surface, attach the attachments for gluing, heat the adhesive tape (usually with a construction hair dryer), remove the protective film and press it tightly to the selected place on the window frame. Then, as in the drilling option, insert the pipe onto the fixed brackets.
Cassette (closed) type of roller blinds completely hides the curtain in a special box. This type has additional plastic guides and is installed on separate sashes. Cassette roller blinds allow you to close the window opening exactly to the width of the guides.
Please note! The cassette mechanism with very dense fabric allows you to achieve 100% darkness in the room.
Roller blinds
These are transparent fabric roller blinds with a light penetration level of 10 to 30%. They are used as decoration and additional protection, with the help of which an air layer is created.
Please note! Transparent roller blinds will not hide what is happening in the room in the evening and at night if artificial light is on. They should be supplemented with thick curtains, drapes.
The main advantage of simple curtains that roll up onto a roller is the ability to observe what is happening on the street without being noticed.
Zebra roller blinds
Day-night is the second name for a zebra-type roller blind. The system consists of stripes on the canvas that alternate with each other. That is, one stripe is transparent, and the second is not. The main advantage of zebra roller blinds is the ability to regulate light using a mechanism that shifts the stripes.
Important! The day-night option is convenient because it does not need to be completely lowered or raised.
The zebra roller blind differs from other types by the presence of additional strips that hold one of the edges of the fabric.
Bamboo
These models of roller blinds have thin bamboo sticks instead of fabric. They are very tightly connected to each other and are easily rolled into a roll. Their main advantages:
- environmental friendliness and safety for health;
- lightness, strength, temperature resistance;
- excellent air permeability and moisture resistance.
Important! Bamboo roller blinds cannot be hung on windows that are wider than 120 cm. This is directly related to the lightness of the material, which over time begins to sag and deform.
Rope
This is the simplest and most budget-friendly version of roller blinds, which is easily attached to the window. Rope roller blinds include:
- ropes that are connected to each other in a horizontal position;
- a roller mechanism that causes the curtain to roll up when the rope is pulled or lowered.
Ropes can have a variety of designs: in the form of balls, marine cord, or a simple cord made of some dense material.
Blackout roller shutters
Blackout roller blinds are commonly called blackout. They block natural light from entering the room regardless of the time of day. To do this, the fabric is impregnated with a special substance that, in addition to protecting from light, prevents other textiles and furniture in the room from fading, and also has dirt-repellent properties.
Important! Blackout roller blinds are very relevant for rooms with windows facing south.
There are different options for opacity:
- high density, the light transmittance of which varies from 50 to 60%;
- super-dense, providing complete (100%) darkness in the room.
The main advantage of blackout roller blinds is their dense, but at the same time light and thin fabric.
Roller blinds in the interior of the house
Regardless of the type of fabric for roller blinds, the most important thing is their color scheme and emphasized stylistic feature. The type of fastening system also plays an important role in the interior of a particular room.
For the living room
Transparent or completely concealing from prying eyes roller blinds are more appropriate today than ever in living rooms of modern minimalism. In order for them to stand out and serve as a clear decor of the room, they are often complemented with photo printing.
Bamboo options are suitable for oriental interiors of living rooms in country and eco styles. Luxurious roller blinds with handcrafted elements and made of natural materials look great in the halls.
To the bedroom
Thick roller blinds with high light-reflecting functions are perfect for a bedroom. Roller blinds made of linen, chintz, cotton and dimout will also look good. The options that will be complemented by light curtains will win.
Please note! Neutral colors such as cream, beige or light gray roller blinds can be easily complemented with traditional curtains and lambrequins.
Zebra roller blinds are also relevant for the bedroom. Their transparent and dense stripes allow you to regulate the light flow from the window with incredible comfort, which is especially important for the bedroom.
To the kitchen
Roller blinds in the kitchen play a more functional role, and a less decorative one. The most common option is rope or open-mechanism curtains impregnated with water-repellent substances.
The main thing in the kitchen interior is the unity of the furniture with the design of the window opening. Long roller options are not appropriate. Roller blinds of short or medium length look compact and practical.
