Lace windows are a new thing in the design sphere. But many people have already fallen in love with them for their originality and beauty. The idea has many advantages: elegant appearance, ease of execution, a large selection of patterns. The romantic design of the glass is not without its practical side. Tulle inserts perfectly hide rooms from prying eyes and are suitable for decorating small spaces.

Secrets of window decoration in small spaces

Window decoration is of great importance. Curtains and drapes block the view from the street, hide the owners of the apartment from prying eyes. But curtains have another important function - decorative. With them, the interior becomes harmonious and cozy. Owners of large areas have no problems with the choice of means for window decoration. Laconic Roman blinds, curtains with large folds or luxurious curtains - all this is suitable for large-sized rooms.

Decorating glass allows you to leave the window sill free

But in small rooms, many of the usual design options are not suitable. Curtains or drapes in tiny rooms can look too heavy. Such textile design can "eat up" half the space. Then many turn to blinds and Roman blinds. But this option also has a significant disadvantage: ordering, manufacturing and installation takes too much time and money.

That is why a new type of design is becoming increasingly popular – lace windows. This design does not require large investments and time. You will only need a minimum supply of tools and a small set of improvised means.

Decorating a window with tulle

Lace windows are tulle glued to glass with starch. This type of design has many advantages:

  • Ease of execution. Even a child can handle this work.
  • A minimal set of tools. Scissors, measuring tape and ruler – all you need to decorate glass.
  • Economy. No need to buy additional curtains, drapes and lambrequins. Any lace piece that you have in stock will do for the design. The main thing is that there are no defects and frayed edges.
  • Beautiful decorative effect. Intricate patterns make the interior elegant. When light passes through the patterned translucent texture, beautiful openwork highlights appear on the walls.

The degree of transparency of the glass depends on the density of the selected tulle

Another plus is that you won't need any special cornices, frames or baguettes for the design. And the result will definitely please all lovers of openwork motifs.

How to glue tulle to glass and what is needed for this?

As already mentioned, before starting work, you need to stock up on a small number of tools. To design glass, you will need:

  • sharp scissors;
  • measuring tape;
  • container for preparing adhesive solution;
  • wide brush;
  • pencil, ruler and thick paper.

You also need to prepare in advance:

  • a piece of lace or tulle;
  • starch (corn/potato).

Before gluing tulle to the window using starch, you need to decide on the material that is suitable for these purposes. There are several options that are acceptable in texture and price.

  1. Tulle with lace motifs. It is better to take a new cut with light patterns. Heavy fabrics will not work. They will not last long on eco-glue.

  2. Tulle-web. It is an interweaving of silk and synthetic threads. Quite a light fabric, but at the same time durable. It will create a beautiful exterior in the form of the finest patterns like "frost" drawings.

    You can choose a spider web with a beautiful floral pattern
  3. Lace fabric. Machine-knitted lace is suitable for the design: openwork and guipure. It is better not to use handmade products. They are too heavy, it will be difficult to fix them on the glass surface. In addition, their cost is very high.

    Semi-transparent lace fabric with a beautiful pattern
    It is better to choose translucent lace if you do not want to darken the room too much.
  4. Vintage tulle. Materials from old stocks are quite suitable for bringing an interesting idea to life. If they are not worn out, without tears and stains, then they can be safely used to create lace glass. Then the design will have a slight retro note.

How to Make Glue from Starch: Recipe, Proportions, and Step-by-Step Instructions

Of course, you can glue tulle to the window glass using synthetic glue. There is no shortage of such creative products now. But this method has several serious disadvantages:

  • Synthetic glue may turn yellow when exposed to sunlight.
  • At elevated temperatures it emits a not very pleasant chemical smell.
  • Removing the material and replacing it with a new one will be quite problematic.

Therefore, it is better to glue the openwork fabric with a natural and environmentally friendly adhesive composition. Corn or potato starch is suitable for these purposes. Accordingly, you can prepare two types of "glue": corn and potato.

Corn

To prepare it you will need:

  • boiling water – 350 ml;
  • cold water – 2 tablespoons;
  • corn starch – 2 tablespoons;
  • container for preparing the solution;
    wooden spatula.

Step by step instructions:

  1. Combine starch with cold water and mix thoroughly. Make sure there are no lumps left.

  2. Pour in boiling water, stirring constantly.
  3. Stir until the glue consistency becomes uniform.
  4. When the mixture has cooled completely, it is ready for use.

Please note! The starch must be of increased whiteness. Then the composition prepared from it will not turn yellow over time and spoil the appearance of the decor.

Starch glue deteriorates quickly, so the mixture must be prepared on the day of gluing.

Potato

It is made a little differently. You will need the following ingredients and tools:

  • Water, well heated, but not boiling – 3 liters.
  • Potato starch – 1 tbsp.

    The best choice is first grade starch.
  • Container for mixing the mixture.
  • Wooden spatula.

Step by step instructions:

  1. Heat the water to a warm temperature.
  2. Pour warm water into a bowl.
  3. Add potato powder, stir until completely dissolved.

    The process of preparing the glue takes 15-20 minutes with constant stirring.

Advice: When performing the work, it is necessary to wear household or medical gloves. This will help protect the skin of your hands from contact with the viscous liquid.

Important! Do not overheat the water for preparing the potato mixture. The temperature should be warm so that the dry powder can better demonstrate its adhesive properties. The solution should not be too thick or too thin. It is necessary to achieve a medium-thick consistency.

How to glue tulle to a window using starch: step-by-step instructions, description, photo

It is very easy to glue lace. But before you start working, you need to thoroughly wash the area where you plan to glue the workpiece. The surface should be clean and degreased. Then prepare the mixture according to one of the recipes indicated above.

When the adhesive solution is ready, you can start decorating the glass. Check in advance that you have everything you need at hand:

  • Measuring tape or tape measure.
  • Thick paper.
  • Ruler and pencil.
  • Wide brush.
  • Lace trim.

Let's move on to the pattern of the textile blank. The step-by-step instructions are as follows:

  1. Using a measuring tape or tape measure, we measure the height and width of the glass.
  2. Transfer the dimensions to paper. Draw a rectangle using a ruler and pencil.
  3. On each side of the rectangle, we make allowances of 0.5 cm. They are needed for shrinkage: when the liquid begins to dry, the fabric will shrink a little.
  4. We cut out the pattern from paper.
  5. We iron a piece of fabric.
  6. We pin the paper pattern to the material.
  7. We outline the pattern with chalk. Then we cut out a rectangular textile blank.

It is very convenient to cut tulle with a rotary cutter.

After the rectangle is cut out, it must be applied to the opening and checked to ensure that the dimensions are correct. After this, fabric blanks are made for the remaining glass.

Now you need to glue the openwork decor to the surface. This can be done in two ways.

Method No. 1

The method allows you to cover windows without first dipping the openwork blank into glue. It is done in several steps.

  1. Using a brush, apply glue to the glass surface.

    Applying glue to windows with your own hands
    Spread the glue evenly over the entire surface of the glass.
  2. We apply the prepared openwork rectangle to the surface and carefully spread the fabric over the entire surface.

    It is important that the fabric lies without folds!
  3. We go over the fabric again with a brush and glue.

    Applying a second layer of glue to the lace tulle
    First, apply the glue in wide strokes over the main surface, then carefully coat the edges of the fabric.
  4. When the product is completely dry, the decor is ready.

Important! When working, make sure that the glue does not get on the plastic frames. Excess solution will thicken and will be difficult to wash off the plastic.

Method No. 2

The method involves completely immersing the material in glue. But the main advantage of this method is the speed of execution. To glue the workpiece, you need to do a couple of simple manipulations:

  1. Take a container with wide edges and pour the corn or potato solution into it.

    Soaking a piece of tulle in starch glue
    Before soaking in starch, tulle should be rinsed in warm water.
  2. We dip a piece of lace into it. It is important to ensure that all the edges of the fabric are immersed in the liquid.
  3. Leave it for a few minutes so that the canvas is saturated with glue.
  4. We take out the textile blank and squeeze it a little. The excess adhesive mixture should flow off.
  5. We straighten the cut and apply it to the surface. Carefully straighten the edges. We make sure that there are no “wrinkles” left on the canvas.

    Do-it-yourself gluing of tulle on the glass of a plastic window
    Smooth out the folds from top to bottom while the tulle is still damp.
  6. We wait until the glue dries. The patterned decoration is ready.

Advice. If you plan to decorate several panes of glass at once, then the glue is applied in stages. First, one transom is processed, then the next one is glued and decorated. If you apply the mixture to all surfaces at once, it will have time to thicken and dry.

Alternative to starch

If you can't use starch, then an alternative can be ordinary soap. It also has adhesive properties. Previously, it was used to seal wooden frames for the winter, using fabric strips. Therefore, the method can be considered proven. Moreover, it is even easier to remove the fabric attached with soap than when using a potato or corn mixture.

Ordinary laundry soap will do the job.

To fix the textile fabric, dip it in warm water, then soap it thoroughly. After squeezing it out a little, apply it to the surface and straighten it out, let it dry.

How to remove patterned inserts?

Any textile covering tends to get dirty and lose its attractiveness. Especially when it comes to the kitchen or children's room. It is more difficult to keep it clean here. Therefore, it is important to know how to remove openwork decorative inserts.

Removing a piece of tulle from glass of a wooden frame
If you used new, good quality tulle to cover the windows, you can remove it, wash it and re-stick it several times.

It is very quick and easy to peel off the patterned fabric from the glass. After all, eco-friendly glue was used during the work. To remove it from the surface, you will need a basin of hot water and a sponge. Instead of a sponge, you can use a soft napkin. The main thing is that it absorbs water well. The patterned insert is easy to remove. To do this, you need the following:

  1. Dip a sponge or napkin into hot water and let it soak up the liquid well.
  2. Then the tulle is wiped with a damp sponge. The surface is treated so that it is well saturated with water.

    Spraying water on tulle on glass from a spray bottle
    You can also wet the fabric using a hand-held sprayer.
  3. The wetted material is left for a few minutes to soak in water.
  4. After this, the insert is carefully peeled off. If there are any difficulties when removing it, you need to go over them with a damp sponge.

    After the starch has soaked, the fabric can be easily removed.

If you do everything correctly, following the instructions, then after removing the textile there will be no stains left.

Examples of lace windows

Glass covered with openwork fabric has its own unusual coloring. They emanate warmth and comfort. Beautiful patterns decorate the glass not only from the inside, but also from the outside. At the same time, the material lets light in well. But at the same time, it protects from excessively aggressive sun rays and curious glances of passers-by. Photos of lace windows will help those who want to try to implement an unusual idea in practice. They show how interesting and unusual romantic patterned decor looks.

If you decorate the glass with tulle, not only the window will be transformed. The entire interior of the room will be different. Designers advise combining the lace on the glass with other objects in the interior. For example, you can duplicate the lace inserts on the sideboard doors or cover the table with a patterned tablecloth. You can also sew pillows from guipure or cover the frame of a floor lamp. Everything depends on the style of the room and the creative imagination of its owners.
