If curtains are interior decoration of the window, first of all. And secondly, it is already intended to protect from the penetration of sunlight. Then tulle is often a replacement or additional interior element. Initially, translucent fabric was used precisely for the ability to hide behind it. Many believe that you can do without it. But if you use it, you need to monitor its cleanliness. Therefore, the question of how to wash tulle is important for housewives!
The fabrics used for its production are very delicate in use. They are less durable than curtains. Tulle fabric, often made of interlacing cotton and silk threads, with various additives added to create a pattern. The flesh-colored, and often pure white color of the fabric, is susceptible to dust, splashes and other types of contamination. But the difficulty of washing delicate fabric is the need for careful handling of the washing technique, as well as its temperature.

How to wash tulle: options
As usual, there are two options.
Using a washing machine
The possibility of delicate washing is present in all types of washing machines today. The main thing is the selection of the temperature mode. It depends on the tulle fabric.
- Cotton fabric can be washed at temperatures from 40 to 60 degrees.
- Silk, satin, nylon fabric or veil, organza – no more than 30 degrees.
- The number of revolutions for delicate fabrics is set to no more than 400 revolutions per minute.
Before loading into the machine, it is necessary to remove all solid contaminants and dust.
Important! If you are concerned about the appearance of the tulle, use a special device - a bag for washing delicate items.
Important! For such types of fabrics, use gel types of detergents, not powder ones, which can damage it.
Washing tulle by hand
Hand washing is quite time-consuming and labor-intensive, but many housewives resort to it. Whether it is right and how to wash tulle by hand, each housewife decides individually, based on the material, available means and possibilities.
The process consists of the following stages:
- Similar to washing tulle in a washing machine, the tulle removed from the curtain rod must be carefully shaken out of accumulated dust and other solid contaminants.
- It is necessary to pre-soak the tulle in water corresponding to the type of fabric for 30-60 minutes. This will allow you to partially get rid of dirty spots and, at a minimum, dilute them.
Many stains can be removed with ordinary laundry soap. - The actual washing is done with gentle movements so as not to damage the fabric.
- The wringing is done lightly. It is better to straighten the canvas, in a hanging position, on the crossbar of the dryer and let the water drain. You can use the curtain rod on which it was hanging for this. This will allow the fabric not to be ironed - which is not recommended!
Important! Do not wash tulle fabrics more than four times a year! You can use a regular vacuum cleaner for cleaning.
Additional information. If the fabric has shrunk after washing and creases have formed, it is recommended to rinse it in a solution of ammonia and hydrogen peroxide. Ingredients: add the following composition (in tablespoons) to ten liters of water: 2/1 peroxide and ammonia. Soak for 20 minutes, then hang on a curtain rod or drying bar without wringing.
How to wash old, worn out or long-storing tulle
In addition to the main problem - refreshing tulle at home, sometimes it is necessary to restore the snow-whiteness of the old canvas, or too dirty. The main advice on how to wash tulle is to turn to folk remedies, as more gentle and tested by generations.
- Using ammonia and hydrogen peroxide in a thicker version for preliminary soaking. Composition (in milliliters) 40/20 (hydrogen peroxide/ammonia) per 6 liters of warm (no more than 40 degrees) water. Soak for 20-40 minutes, depending on the contamination.
Pay attention to the expiration date - expired products will not give the desired effect. To avoid damaging your hands, use rubber gloves
Additional information: For local stains, use hydrogen peroxide alone, in which the stain should be soaked for 10 minutes.
- Using a chlorinated bleaching agent, such as "Belizna". Use 3 caps of bleach per bucket of warm (30-degree) water. Soaking period - 60 minutes. After this, shake the fabric and put it in the washing machine or wash it by hand.
Bleach is not suitable for washing delicate fabrics. - For rinsing, you can use a mixture of sea salt (2 tablespoons) and brilliant green (13 drops), dissolved in 0.5 liters of warm water. It is necessary to ensure that the sediment (undissolved parts of the mixture) does not remain at the bottom. Before use, during the last rinse, it is necessary to filter the mixture from the sediment, otherwise green spots may appear on the canvas.
First, the green stuff needs to be thoroughly mixed in a small amount of water until it is completely dissolved.
Important! The fabric must be thoroughly soaked with this composition.
- To soak the tulle, use a mixture of baking soda and washing powder (50 g / 100 g). It is necessary to achieve its complete dissolution in a basin of warm water. Pre-soaking time is about 30 minutes.
The main active ingredient in this method is soda, so you can take inexpensive powder, without any “super additives” - Regular table salt, used for soaking before washing, allows you to remove yellowness (grayness) from tulle. Ingredients: for 9 liters of water - 5 tablespoons of salt.
Coarse salt, not iodized, is best. - Tar or laundry soap is a good stain remover for delicate fabrics. Use half a bar of soap per ten liters of hot water. After the water has cooled to the desired temperature (30 degrees), soak the tulle in a basin for 60 minutes. You can also boil the tulle in this solution.
The laundry soap needs to be grated on a fine grater
Important! Boiling or "cooking" fabric is not a safe way to bleach. The structure of the fabric may be damaged, which will reduce its useful life.
- Using a stain remover for yellowed curtains. There are many types of chemical stain removers on the market, varying in composition and price. The main thing is to carefully read the manufacturer's recommendations for the consistency of the product for different fabrics. The stain remover is used both for local cleaning of stains and for general preliminary soaking. The limitation is to avoid direct sunlight on the damp fabric when drying.
- An effective remedy for washing out rust stains is 9% vinegar (2 tablespoons per glass of water), which must be heated to 90 degrees. The stain is dipped into the resulting liquid, then rinsed in warm water with ammonia (1 tablespoon per 2 liters of water).
Vinegar works well on stubborn stains. - Rusty stains can be removed by soaking in acids (oxalic, citric, formic). Composition: 20 g of acid per glass of hot water.
All three acids act in approximately the same way, but only citric acid can be purchased at any grocery store.
Important! When using vinegar or acid, wear rubber gloves to avoid burns.
All the above folk methods used when washing tulle curtains, based on the experience of our grandmothers, show how to wash white or other colored tulle.
The recommendations given on how to properly wash curtains or tulle are based on the recommendations of the older generation. Not every product, for example, formic, oxalic acid, can be found in stores, but most of the products given are available to every housewife. Washing tulle does not take much time, but it adds freshness to the window interior and the atmosphere of the room.
