Types of cornices
For each specific room design, there are always several different types of cornices available in construction stores. They differ in:
- type of material of manufacture;
- the method of fastening and the type of fastener;
- the shape of the supporting crossbar.
Wood, metal and plastic are used as materials for manufacturing window textile fasteners. Each material is successfully used for various interior styles. Plastic products are especially popular due to their low cost, availability, but most importantly – a huge selection of different color options, shapes and designs.
Metal and wooden curtains are expensive. They are purchased for luxurious interiors, decorated with wood or chrome elements. These products can withstand heavy loads, so curtains made of thick fabrics, richly decorated with glass beads, decorative clamps and all sorts of frills are suitable here.
Different types of fasteners are used for different repairs. Typically, these are fasteners for:
- wall;
- and the ceiling.
Ceiling systems are usually profile products with several grooves for attaching hooks. But sometimes telescopic or tubular curtain rods are attached to the ceiling. Oh yes, there are different types of cornices too. These are:
- profile;
- crossbars;
- and cables.
Crossbars and cables are usually attached to the wall, and profile ones to the ceiling. But there are exceptions: some are installed on the ceiling, and others on the wall.
How to hang a curtain rod on a wall: step-by-step instructions
To learn how to hang curtains on a wall correctly, read the following tips:
- The first step is to mark the wall. This is a crucial step, as the final result depends on its correct execution. What could go wrong? Are you sure that the wall and ceiling meet at a perfect 90 degrees? This is usually not the case, so be sure to measure the fastening points from the ceiling.
When marking, do not use the ceiling as a guide; to accurately determine the horizontal line of the cornice suspension, it is better to use a level. - First, mark the line of the middle of the window opening. From it, you need to put off two marks on both sides for the brackets. Do not forget that the marking starts from the ceiling. The distance from the curtain to the ceiling should be equal to 5-10 centimeters.
The wall cornice is usually hung at a level of 1/3 of the distance from the ceiling to the window opening. - After marking, you can start drilling holes. Depending on the wall material, choose a drill.
To drill a concrete wall you need a hammer drill or a drill with impact mode - The final step is to install the dowels and screw the screws in. Once the brackets are installed, it remains to insert the crossbar with curtain rings into them.
Scheme of fixing wall cornice
As the reader has already understood, the example of installing a cornice with one round crossbar was considered above. To carry out the entire list of works, you will need marking and power tools, as well as fasteners.
Here's what you need:
- Pencil, chalk or marker.
- Meter-long construction ruler.
- Impact drill (perforator).
- Dowel nails with plastic or metal bushings (depending on the wall material).
Universal plastic dowel Metal dowel for heavy curtains Screw dowel for aerated concrete - Drills for concrete, stone, wood or plasterboard (the choice depends on what the wall is made of).
- Cornice with brackets.
When you order a curtain, do not forget to measure the distance at what height you hung the curtain rod from the ceiling. It is important to measure and write down this parameter, since when buying a custom curtain, you must specify the length to the floor.
Important! Measurements should be taken from the edge of the hooks (rings) to the floor. This way you will get reliable data.
Experts advise taking the length of the crossbar more than the window opening by 30-50 cm on each side. If there is only one window and it is located in a short wall, the crossbar can be installed almost along the length of the wall, leaving a gap of 5-10 centimeters.
Remember three main nuances:
- The curtain should not touch the open window.
- The bottom edge of the tulle should be 5-8 cm away from the radiator.
- The length of the crossbar must ensure full opening of the window opening.
Usually, when buying a curtain, the basic package includes brackets. Their length ensures the correct positioning of the crossbar and tulle in the future. But it would be a good idea to measure the width of the open window and the protruding radiator in advance, and compare this data with the length of the bracket. If the length is insufficient, the fasteners must be replaced.
How to hang a ceiling curtain rod correctly
The procedure for installing a curtain hanger on the ceiling space is no different from mounting it on the wall. But there are some nuances here. And the main one is the material from which the ceiling is made. Very often in residential apartments you can find plasterboard and tension structures. And such materials are not able to withstand a large load.
There are special fasteners for plasterboard. These are the same dowels with screws, but only of a special design. Each of them is designed for a certain load, above which the element cannot be loaded.
You can't do without preliminary analysis. The type of cornice, the material it is made from, the number of crossbars or grooves for curtains, as well as the type and density of the fabric play a significant role. These parameters determine the weight of the entire product. After all, it is known that plasterboard is a fragile composition. Its edges can easily crack, and the cornice will simply jump out onto the floor.
There is no special fastener for stretch ceilings. If you planned to attach curtains to the ceiling system, then you need to provide wooden (metal) bars for the base. In this case, installing window textiles on ceiling fasteners will not be difficult.
It is important to know at what distance to hang the curtain rod from the ceiling. The determining parameter is the gap between the curtains, the window and the heating radiator (battery). It is best to visually try on where the curtain rod goes by placing the curtain. This way you will achieve an accurate result.
The order of the work is as follows:
- Marking the ceiling space.
- Drilling holes for dowels and screws.
- Fastening brackets and crossbars.
If a plastic (aluminum) profile type cornice is installed, there is no need to attach brackets. The product is attached directly to the ceiling surface using dowels. Additionally, such a solution is decorated with a decorative baguette.
How to attach a curtain rod to a loose wall
People often face the problem of installing cornice brackets in loose walls. A thick layer of old plaster tends to crumble when plastic dowels are installed in drilled holes. Naturally, nothing serious will hold in such a wall. You'd better forget about beautiful Italian curtains.
To get rid of this problem, it is not necessary to do a major overhaul. It is enough to drill holes of a larger diameter than the dowels purchased. The holes are sealed with tile adhesive or wooden "dowels" with liquid nails. After complete hardening and drying, you will only have to screw the screws into the wood.
Thanks to the various types of fasteners and cornices, you can hang beautiful curtains in any room, with any of its shortcomings.
Thanks for the information. I found the answer to my question. A new one arose: how to properly decorate the windows in the bedroom in a wooden house (attic floor, different levels of windows and balconies, which are on different walls). I want short curtains for the windows, to the windowsill.
Curtains are a type of drapes, not cornices!
