Description, distinctive features
"Day-night" is a simple design consisting of only three parts - a fabric canvas, a rotating shaft and a weighting tube. In the closed type, there is also a plastic box.
The operating principle is approximately the same as that of most roller blinds. But there is one significant difference. In conventional roller blinds, the fabric consists of one layer and is lowered only on one side of the moving shaft. The day-night system is double, consisting of two layers. The fabric is on both sides of the shaft.
How do day-night roller shutters work?
The canvas is assembled from strips of fabric of different density - from translucent to opaque. They are arranged alternately, so the "day-night" roller blinds are often called "zebra". When the shaft rotates, the fabric goes in a circle, the strips overlap each other, creating the desired degree of illumination. If two transparent strips are combined, then soft, diffused light enters the room. If a transparent strip is covered by a dense one, then the room will be in semi-darkness.
This design allows for smooth light transitions, letting the required amount of light into the room. At the same time, a person inside the room remains invisible to prying eyes from the outside.
What is the fabric made of?
The fabric is made of high-quality synthetics with Teflon impregnation. Due to this, the material is easy to care for - easy to clean, repels dust, has high strength and antistatic properties. In addition to increased functionality, roller blinds have excellent design characteristics.
Transparent stripes look like organza. Dense stripes can be made in different variations - plain, decorated with patterns, with a shiny coating. A wide range of colors allows you to choose a model for any room design.
Types of day-night window roller shutters
The choice of rolled "zebras" in design and texture is huge. According to design, they come in two types:
- Open. A simple system in which the roll of strips is not covered with protective plastic. The web is freely released from the shaft.
- Closed. The box hides the shaft with fabric.
Open
Their design is elementary - the canvas is attached to a shaft with a rotating mechanism. There is a weighting bar at the bottom.
This type of light protection system has several clear advantages:
- Easy to assemble and disassemble.
- Simplicity of the device.
- Low price.
- Possibility of installation on windows with non-standard dimensions.
- A wide selection of fabrics for any interior.
Another advantage is that, unlike many products of this class, the zebra can be mounted almost anywhere – directly on the window frame, inside the opening, on the wall, or on the ceiling. There are also mounts that are installed with tape. There is no need to drill the window or wall. There are several installation methods:
- Above the window opening. Suitable for solid windows without sashes.
Curtain over the window opening with wall mounting - On each window sash. Ideal for windows where both sashes open.
Placement on plastic window sashes - Inside the opening. This saves space on the window sill.

Closed
The design is more complex, but its basic components are the same as for the open type - canvas, shaft, control mechanism, lower bar. The closed type has additional parts - a box, guides, clamps. The shaft with a roll of canvas is hidden under the box. The guides cover the side of the fabric and fix it on the frame with special tape and clamps.
Advantages of closed type roller shutters:
- Long service life. The box protects the material from dust, dirt and damage.
- Possibility of automation by a mechanism controlled by a remote control.
- Excellent fixation. The material fits tightly to the window thanks to the U-shaped cassette fastening.
- Smooth adjustment. The guides help the canvas rise and fall evenly, without jerking.
- Neat appearance. Thanks to good fixation, the structure looks neater.
Types of roller blinds "zebra" by control type
- Chain. Control is carried out with the help of a plastic chain. If you pull it, the rotation mechanism starts. To stop it, just stop the control. The canvas will automatically be fixed at the desired height.
Chain control is the most common way to regulate curtains. - Remote. The electric drive does not require an electric cable. The motor has a built-in battery that is charged using an adapter. The charge lasts for a long time - 6 months or more. The automation is controlled using a remote control.
You don't have to get up from your couch to open an electric curtain - Spring. Non-automatic control is carried out with the help of a spring, which keeps the winding shaft under tension for the web rolling at all times. There is a special mechanism for fixing in the closed position. This can be a handle, a hook, a ring or a hole in the lower bar.
How to install day night roller blinds on plastic windows?
Before installing the "zebra", you need to decide where it will be placed - on the sashes, the wall or in the window opening. Then the installation is carried out depending on the type of fastening. There are three types of fastening:
- With self-tapping screws.
- Brackets.
- With special tape.
Installation with self-tapping screws
- We assemble the roller shutter and install the chain mechanism on the side where it will be convenient for you to operate it.
- We make markings on the profile with a pencil: we mark the location of the first bracket. We drill a hole and install a dowel. We screw the fastener.
- Mark the location of the second fastening. Use a level to avoid distortions. Install the second bracket.
- Next, installation is carried out according to the instructions included with the device.
Important: To prevent the curtain from sagging, it is recommended to additionally install a guide line or string.
Installation with brackets
In this case, brackets on special tape are used. This type of fastening is best suited for windows with sashes. The installation instructions look like this:
- Remove the protective film from the tape on the back of the brackets.
- We attach brackets to the open sash from above.
- We assemble the structure according to the diagram attached to the manual.
Installation with tape
The easiest way to fix a roller blind, since no drilling is required.
- We treat the window profile with a special degreasing compound in those places where the zebra crossing will be installed.
- We remove the protective layer from the tape and glue it to the profile.
- We carry out installation according to the instructions.
Important. Before gluing, the tape needs to be slightly heated. This way it will better fix on the profile. Use a regular hair dryer for this purpose.
Options for using day-night curtain fabrics in the interior

- For small rooms, roller blinds that match the color of the walls are suitable.
- In large rooms, you can use contrasting curtains. But they must necessarily echo the color of several details in the interior.
Horizontal stripes look great on large and panoramic windows. - It is better to choose calm but fresh tones for the kitchen. Ideal shades: pistachio, pink, coral.
- For the bedroom, coffee, mint, beige and lavender shades are ideal.
