Roller blinds look like a solid, uncut piece of material attached to a shaft. The lift is adjusted by a chain mechanism. The kit includes a clamp that secures the fabric at any height of the window opening. At the bottom is a guide that stretches the material along the length, preventing it from sagging. They have gained popularity. They are often used in interior design for the following reasons:
- Ease of use.
- They do not require complex care.
- They can be plain, with patterns, made of fabrics of different densities. They fit into any interior.
- Durable and reliable.
With the right choice of material, the holder systems will be ideal for windows and doors in your loggia. They will provide not only an aesthetic appearance, but also functionality.

Roller blinds for the balcony. Selection criteria
In order to correctly select the required model for glazed balconies, first of all you need to pay attention to the design of your windows and doors.
Let's highlight three main types:
- Sliding systems.
- Aluminum windows.
- Let's take a separate look at the balcony door.
Important: When choosing curtains for a sliding system, it is necessary to take into account the features of its operation.
The components move along two parallel guides. Simply put, the principle of a sliding wardrobe. In this case, one sash overlaps the other. Let's assume that the balcony consists of four window frames. The two middle ones can slide apart, running over the outer ones. In this case, we can only fix the product directly to the frame for the moving parts.
In this case, there will simply be no room for fasteners on the fixed parts. This option cannot be considered entirely suitable. Only half of the balcony will be protected from the sun and prying eyes. How to attach the curtains along the entire length? Installation is carried out to the ceiling or wall. The optimal distance from the glass to the shaft is selected. In this case, you can close the entire area of the balcony windows. This variation will not interfere with the full operation of the sliding system.
It is also possible to place the canvas in the gap between the glass units. In this case, the control structure is brought out so as not to interfere with the operation of the windows themselves. But hygienic maintenance becomes impossible, since the main part is simply inaccessible.
In view of all of the above, the ideal solution for this type of window design would be ceiling mounting.
More familiar and widespread are aluminum windows. In this design, each sash is equipped with separate fittings. It regulates the positions: open, closed, ventilation. "Blind" parts that do not change their location are possible. This makes it possible not to be tied to the mechanisms of the windows themselves.
The roller blinds come with fasteners with clamps and tape (not the average one, but professional double-sided construction tape). They are able to securely fasten the blinds without damaging the window frame itself. We will look at the designs and step-by-step fastening instructions in more detail in a separate section of the article.
The balcony door is a separate topic, as it has a specific design and functions. Just like individual parts of aluminum windows, its position in space is adjustable. But most often it occupies the extreme position, that is, almost flush with the wall.
It is necessary to choose the right size of the fabric for roller blinds on the balcony door. So that when opening the roller does not rest. In case of correct calculation there will be no obstacles for the door operation. The door slope finish is not damaged. Installation from the outside is acceptable. The inconvenience is that each time to change the height of the curtain you will have to open the balcony door.
Selection of material
The modern market offers two materials for the production of roller blinds.
Tree
Pros: natural, does not cause allergies, original appearance. Cons: difficult to regulate the amount of light transmitted, heavy weight, the degree of noise emitted is greater than that of fabric. You should take into account that the balcony is a part of the apartment, where there is often wind and drafts. If you are ready for not high, but constant noise, this option is suitable.
Textile
Pros: variety of textures, colors, transparency. Not picky in care.
What fabrics are best to use for a balcony? It all depends on the effect you want to achieve.
Translucent materials cope well with light dispersion. They have little functionality. In the dark, they will not protect from the eyes of passers-by on the street. They are used more for design moves.
Examples of fabric curtains:
- Organza. Two threads are twisted. It can be made of polyester, silk, viscose. Shiny, light. Monochrome and multicolor.
A transparent organza curtain only diffuses daylight, without protecting the room from prying eyes in the evening. - Screen. Polymer fibers are interwoven on a fiberglass base. Does not burn. Protects from the sun. It is possible to apply a pattern (for example, newspaper printing).
The composite composition of the fabric ensures durability and resistance to stretching - The so-called dimout curtains have a number of advantages. Due to the "mother-of-pearl composition" they repel sunlight. At the same time, the room remains quite illuminated. They have thermoregulatory properties (they do not let heat through).
Dimout fabrics provide 70–80% sun protection, creating a feeling of twilight, but not complete darkness. - Blackout. Completely block out light. The outer side repels light and does not let heat through. If you do not plan any curtains on the intermediate window to the main room, then the "night city" option is possible. Slits are made in the canvas, imitating the outlines of megacities.
The special structure of the blackout fabric allows it to completely block the sun's rays - Day-night. Alternating transparent and dense sections. The frequency of the stripes can be adjusted to regulate the illumination.
The day-night curtain consists of two panels, in which dense fabric alternates with transparent material. - Linen. Smooth, matte. Made from natural fibres.
- Silk. Eco-friendly, but expensive material. Bright colors, possible designs. Shiny.
- Cotton. Similar in characteristics to linen. Their disadvantage is that they wrinkle and deform after getting wet (“shrink” after washing).
Cotton curtains are environmentally friendly, but not durable and are not very suitable for unheated rooms. - Satin. Silk interlaced with cotton threads. Dense, smooth.
- Polyester. Withstands temperature changes (important for rooms without heating). Wear-resistant. Not afraid of moisture. Does not stretch. Photo printing and texture application are possible on its basis. Moisture-resistant. The standard option for use on the balcony.
Polyester products do not attract dust and are easy to clean.
Installation and fastening
How to assemble the curtain components? The kit includes: a coupling device, a tip and a roll with fabric. Everything is simple - you attach the chain mechanism on one side. The tip is like a plug on the other.
In the previous blocks of the article we looked at 2 options for fastening. Now we will tell you about the sequence of stages.
To the ceiling
- Using a level, we mark the drilling locations, equidistant from the window.
Marking is done from the center of the sash to the sides at equal distances - We screw the bracket with self-tapping screws, holding it with our hand.
Fasteners are selected based on the design of the balcony ceiling - We fix the roll to the brackets.
- We fix the roller blind.
If you decide to mount it to the wall, the scheme is the same, except that the bracket is not screwed into the ceiling.
To the window frame
- We degrease the surface with acetone or ordinary nail polish remover.
- Remove the protective film from the tape.
- We put the fasteners on top of the window frame. Tighten them tightly.
- We attach the shaft with the blade.
- Let's fix it.
Installation is not complicated. If you follow the instructions, you do not need to contact specialists.
Examples of use
The variety of materials, designs, and mounting methods makes it possible to use roller blinds in any combination and setting. It does not matter which room your loggia or balcony opens out from. The number of colors and textures will allow you to fit in and be a continuation of the interior. They will create comfort and coziness.
With monochromatic walls, you can play on contrast. Black – white, white – red, gray – beige, and so on. Curtains will stand out with colorful spots, drawing attention to themselves.
Shades of one color. Looks like a continuation of each other, without sharp transitions. For lovers of a calm, peaceful atmosphere.
With drawings on any subject. If the loggia comes from the children's room - scenes from cartoons. From the adult bedroom - your photos (material suitable for photo printing). The flight of fantasy is unlimited. Such a move will become the highlight of the whole decor.
Textured. Fresh, not "hackneyed". It is advisable to match the wall decoration. Get as close as possible to the pattern on the wallpaper, or shade it (Stripes on the walls, circles on the curtains).
When choosing a specific model, consider the practical side. After all, the main role of balcony curtains is to protect from the sun and protect privacy. You should have a panoramic view from your balcony, not passers-by.
