Handy materials for curtains
It turns out that fabric is not the only material for making curtains. If you have some ingenuity, you can make your own curtains from almost anything that comes into your field of vision.
- Disks.
Not so long ago, every home had a fair number of silver CDs. They recorded music, movies, and games on them. Today, almost no one uses this "rarity." But there are still piles of discs. Don't rush to throw them away. Drill two holes in each disc: one at the top and one at the bottom, and fasten them together with paper clips. If you don't want to use paper clips, then connect them with a thin but strong rope or fishing line.
- Traffic jams.
A similar option is curtains made from wine corks. Of course, you will have to save up the required amount for quite a long time. But if you tell your numerous friends and relatives about your plans, perhaps they will come to your aid. You can not only connect the corks together, but also add wooden beads between them.
- Plastic bottle caps.
"Accumulating" the required amount of such material will not be difficult. It is better if the corks are multi-colored, then the structure will fit perfectly into the interior of the nursery.
- "Thread curtains" made from ribbons.
A great option for a country house is an unusual design made of ribbons of different textures and colors. By the way, it is not necessary to buy special ribbons, just cut unnecessary fabrics (tablecloths, sheets, curtains) into ribbons of a certain width and length. The ribbons are attached separately to the "cornice", which is an ordinary stick or cane. The ribbons are glued, buttoned, tied or attached in some other way.
- Cocktail straws.
At first glance, this handy material cannot be used for any other purpose, but in skillful hands even tubes turn into a bright and stylish accessory. At the very beginning, a knot is made on the cord and a bead is strung, then a tube, then a bead again, and so on until the desired length. For variety, place decorative details between the elements, for example, paper butterflies or snowflakes.
- Foam plastic.
An accessible and beloved material by many needlewomen. Cut out elements of different sizes and shapes from it and string them on a fishing line.
- Buttons.
Probably, every housewife has a treasured box in which buttons are stored. As a rule, such boxes are not small in size, since a great many buttons accumulate. So, as they say, you can "kill two birds with one stone": reduce the number of buttons lying dead weight and build an interesting design. To do this, buttons are strung randomly on a strong fishing line. If desired, such "curtains" can be made in one color.
- Beads.
Today, craft stores offer a huge range of beads and other accessories. They are quite affordable and are intended for various purposes: from creating jewelry to making a special type of curtains. So, having bought a sufficient number of beads of different sizes, shapes and colors (or, conversely, the same size and one color), string them on a fishing line.
Simple and beautiful
If you consider yourself a conservative in matters of window decoration, then create curtains from a familiar material - ordinary fabric. First of all, do not be afraid to start making curtains with your own hands. In fact, even if you are not a professional, it will not be difficult to lay a line on a machine. The first line will be followed by a second, third, and so on. And now the result is noticeable.
Of course, a lot depends on the chosen model. For example, "grandmother's curtains" do not even require a pattern, it is enough to just make precise markings on the canvas. And in order to create a real masterpiece with lambrequins and ties, it is better to use master classes and detailed instructions. For complex designs, certain skills will also be required. But, as they say, a bad start is a bad start!
Tools and materials
No matter which model you decide to take on, the set of tools is practically the same. So, to create a masterpiece for window decoration, you will need:
- scissors;
- centimeter and ruler;
- pattern;
- tailor's chalk;
- pins;
- seam ripper (in case something goes wrong);
- thimble.
And, of course, a sewing machine.
Curtain options for different rooms
Kitchen
This is probably the most suitable option for beginner needlewomen. The curtains in the "grandmother style" that are widespread today will require minimal professional skills. In addition, since the curtains are short, the model will not require serious financial investments and efforts.
The simplest option is one canvas.
You will only need two measurements: length and width. To get a beautiful drapery, the width is multiplied by one and a half or by two, depending on how “thick” the drapery you want to get as a result.
A wide variety of fabrics are suitable for such curtains: linen, cotton, cambric, as well as burlap or organza.
The color scheme is up to you. Give preference to a single-color fabric and then complement it with braid and appliqués. Or take a material with a pattern (it is better if the print is small), and give the finished look using lace or satin ribbon in the same tone.
By the way, in fact, the "grandmother's window" looks quite modern today. A well-designed interior allows you to make the kitchen not just stylish, but also functional, which is also important.
Bedroom
In addition to beauty and style, curtains in the bedroom will also require sufficient protection from sunlight. Therefore, when choosing a model for sewing, pay special attention to functionality.
The most convenient option for a bedroom is two floor-length curtains and thin tulle. And again, only two parameters are required: length and width.
Don't forget to iron the stitched areas carefully. After that, we sew a special tape to the top part, which will allow the canvas to hold its shape. We place the canvases on the cornice.
Living room
The hall is a special place in every home. Therefore, you want the window decoration to not only make an indelible impression on your guests, but also create a special atmosphere.
If the overall design concept allows, curtains can be “assembled” from separate pieces of fabric of the same texture but different colors (patchwork style). Or they can be canvases in the “abstraction” style. Curtains made from fabric remnants will complement the country style. Finally, two standard canvases can be fixed with holders in an unusual shape.
How to update old curtains
And sometimes it happens that you don’t want to completely change the window design, but you’re a little tired of the window in its current form. What to do? With a slight movement of your hand, turn your favorite curtains into a creative option.
- Add volume. Place bright (or not so bright) appliques on plain smooth curtains. This option is especially suitable for a child's room.
- Add a backside. By making the curtains double, you can fix them in such a way that the contrasting backside is visible.
- Use interesting curtain holders: a mug without a bottom, a simple belt or crocheted flowers.
- Sew a contrasting tape along the perimeter of the fabric. Add lace to match the color along the bottom.
- Make an unusual fastening of the canvases to the cornice. For example, attach the curtain with ties or textile loops.
- Change the shape of the structure. For example, if your curtains have always flowed smoothly to the floor, fix them high enough.
As they say, everything is in your hands. Looking for interesting solutions for your own interior – give free rein to your imagination. And do not hesitate to use familiar objects for other purposes. Then the creative design of the window opening will be provided.
