A cornice is a special equipment that is designed to attach curtains, tulle, and drapes. They are usually installed at the top of the room. This is a window, ceiling, or wall.

In addition to the function of hanging curtains and ennobling the rooms, the structure together with the curtains make the room more attractive, completing the decorated image. Curtains complement the interior of the room, creating an atmosphere of home comfort.

It is important to choose a cornice model that will be functional and fit into the overall interior of the room.

The devices differ in the type of curtain fastening, the installation area, and the material from which they are made.

Telescopic

The equipment consists of two tubes that differ from each other in diameter. The length is easily changed and the installation process is very simple. The structure hangs on the wall thanks to a vintage spring.

The spring at the end of the tube ensures that the cornice is fixed between two vertical planes.

This curtain device is suitable for rooms with small windows, and is also an ideal option for a bathroom. The device has a water-repellent structure. This means that the curtain can last a long time, especially in a room with high humidity, without surface defects. The disadvantage of the design is that it is unsuitable for large rooms with high ceilings.

Round

A round or rod curtain rod looks like a tube, metal or wooden. It is made separately for each room, taking into account the dimensions. On the tube there are ring fragments necessary for adhesion between the curtain and the crossbar. There are hooks on the rings.

The advantages of these devices are that they are easy to install, easy to maintain, and can hang curtains made of heavy fabrics.

The downside of round curtains is their cost. Considering the material they are made from, they are significantly more expensive than many other designs. But high-quality devices will last a long time, allowing you not to change the curtains often.

Tire

The cornices are made of aluminum alloy or plastic. They look like a base with rail tracks. Hooks are inserted inside. They are easy to use. The tulle is easily removed from them, along with the clothespins. They are loyal in terms of price category.

The track is used to fix curtains on the ceiling of the room.

The disadvantage of the bar is that the plastic splint is not able to hold heavy fabrics. Over time, the appearance of the structure may crack and change color to yellow.

In this regard, aluminum busbar equipment is more appropriate, as it is much more durable.

Electronic curtain rod

A device from the category of more modern technologies, having an electric drive. Curtains along the perimeter of the curtain move automatically. Control is based on a button.

This type of curtain rod can be installed either on the wall or on the ceiling.

The bar is suitable for apartments with high ceilings, holds thick, heavy curtains. The main disadvantage of such a device is that it is difficult to repair due to breakage. In terms of price, it significantly exceeds other curtains.

Tension

Very flimsy equipment, unable to hold heavy curtains. Such curtains are made of plastic, and cables are chosen for fastenings. Recommended for tulle in small rooms. The device is easy to install and they are quite inexpensive.

A tension cornice requires a rigid base at the attachment points, so its use on plasterboard structures is only possible with the strengthening of the base, which is discussed below in the article.

Skid

The profile is made of aluminum or metal alloy, which is suspended on the ceiling or the upper part of the wall, covered with an interior baguette. Baguette is a strip that acts as a decoration.

It is advisable to use such equipment for long curtains. The advantage of the design is the ease of attachment to the base, easy to maintain. But the device is not suitable for the entire range of curtains. Its price is intermediate.

Flexible

The bar can be easily changed in shape due to its flexible structure. It is installed in rooms with non-standard window shapes where it is impossible to attach a standard device. It bends easily without much effort. It is very easy to install, with convenient curtain clips. It does not lose its appearance for a long time, since the equipment is made of aluminum.

The fastening is carried out to the ceiling or the upper part of the wall. Universal and will suit any type of interior of the room. The disadvantage is that it can be used only for one model range of curtains. The structure holds only light fabrics.

How to install a curtain rod on plasterboard with your own hands - we offer a step-by-step guide

Installing curtain structures is considered an overwhelming and very difficult task for many people. For reliability, apartment owners are convinced that it is necessary to reach a solid wall base during installation.

In practice, everything is much simpler, the structure can be fixed to plasterboard. How to fix a curtain rod to plasterboard? Below are the most proven and simple solutions.

Strengthening the foundation

Suitable for owners of premises who are still in the process of renovation and have not equipped the constructed frame with plasterboard. The point of the method is that the place for attaching the curtain is reinforced from the inside using any suitable fragment.

Wooden beam on the ceiling for fixing the cornice
The thickness of the installed beam must be equal to the depth of the frame for plasterboard

This can be a wooden element 30-35 mm thick or more, which is attached along the structure. It is screwed to the wall or ceiling and is a solid base along the entire length of the window opening. Now you can easily fix the bar. The plasterboard is screwed with a nail or a self-tapping screw along the wooden base, the fastener firmly adjoins the reliable element.

Important! This option is simple and does not require complex skills. It is enough to simply screw in the screws and secure the curtain rod. But if the curtain rods have already been installed, it will be impossible to secure the surface.

Applications of butterfly dowel

Here, the fastening is carried out to an existing structure. The element firmly fixes the plasterboard on the back side, ensuring the reliability of the attached product. Withstands weight up to 16 kg. For installation, you will need a drill, screwdriver and a butterfly dowel.

The butterfly dowel consists of a spacer and a static part.

It is necessary to first assemble the cornice, this is necessary for installation, in order to calculate the distance and location of the fastening section.

The strip is fixed to the wall, markings are made. Then holes are drilled. Dowels are installed before attaching the structure. The butterfly is inserted into the hole.

Remember! You need to insert the dowels before fixing the curtain rod to the plasterboard.

Next, use a screwdriver to turn the screw until it stops. After installation, it is important to install plugs on the holes. They are necessary to cover the fixation point.

When the screw is tightened, the “wings” straighten out and press tightly against the back surface of the drywall.

For heavy structures, it is advisable to use metal fasteners. Although they are more expensive, they are much more reliable.

Fastening a metal butterfly dowel to plasterboard
Metal butterfly dowels are much more expensive than plastic products, but they can withstand a load of several tens of kilograms.

Application of the Drive dowel

At the first stage, the cornice is assembled and applied evenly to the ceiling surface. Mark the holes. Use a screwdriver to screw the dowel into the installed point for fixation. Now you can screw in the screws. The curtain is tightly placed and secured with a 4/30 mm screw.

Plastic and metal dowel Driva

To ensure maximum reliability of fixing the strip when planning to place heavy curtains, you can add liquid nails to the installation. They are inserted into the prepared hole before inserting the dowel. A strong mass is formed inside that can withstand any load.

Marking the level of the installation location of the wall cornice
It is advisable to use a level when marking.

Before installation, marking is done. The size of the brackets should preferably be longer than the protruding part of the window sill. This is important for convenience and comfort in the future.

Trying on a cornice on a wall with a window opening
If necessary, the cornice is cut to the required size.

If the curtain is fixed to the ceiling, the cornice must be moved to the required distance. When using a plumb line, you can check how the curtains will be positioned in the future.

After installing the marking fixation with a pencil and tape measure, you must first see how the window will open and the curtain will hang.
