Window decoration is an important component of a beautiful and harmonious interior, beautiful curtains give the room an aesthetic and finished look, make it cozy. There is a wide variety of window decoration options, various fabrics and fittings. But decorating the window opening with lambrequins remains relevant.
Lambrequin is a decoratively draped fabric that decorates the upper opening of a window, door along the entire cornice. Sometimes it is used to decorate a bed.
Nowadays, the use of lambrequins in interior design is quite common. They can be found in the design of bedrooms, living rooms, children's rooms.
Types of lambrequin:
- soft;
- hard;
- combined.
Soft curtains are also divided into several types. The difference between them is in the combination of fabrics and variations of drapery. Here are some basic options:
- swag;
- throw over;
- tie;
- coquille;
- bell;
- puffs.
There are 2 types of rigid lambrequins:
- with a straight, figured edge;
- openwork.
The difference between a hard and a soft lambrequin is that the hard one is stretched on a frame and is a solid canvas without any folds. Soft ones are a drapery of various canvases, soft and smooth lines.
In combination ones, soft and hard bases are combined.

Sewing your own lambrequin
When sewing a narrow lambrequin, follow the instructions. Even a novice dressmaker can handle this process.
When sewing a lambrequin with your own hands, you first make a pattern. It is made according to the following scheme:
- take a piece of paper and draw a horizontal line on it (this is the base that will be attached to the cornice);
- calculate the footage and width of the swag;
- measure and read off the arc length;
- develop a cascade (how the folds will be draped);
- they cut it out;
- cut out the future product.
Tools needed during the work:
- scissors;
- measuring tape;
- cutting paper;
- tailor's chalk;
- square.
The next step is to take measurements of the window:
- height from floor to cornice;
- window width.
Important! The width from the wall to the window opening is added to the last indicator, since the product will cover this space.
Also, if you plan to sew curtains that are not floor-length, measure the footage from the cornice to the intended bottom edge of the curtain.
When calculating fabric, the following indicators are taken into account:
- fabric reserve in width for the curtain (for this, the length of the cornice is increased by 2-2.5 times). This is necessary to form beautiful and smooth folds on the fabric;
- length of curtains (add 15 cm).
It should be noted! The calculation of the material directly depends on the type of lambrequin that is being made.
How to sew a lambrequin using a pattern
After making the pattern as in the photo step by step, proceed to cutting the fabric itself and directly to sewing the curtains.
Lambrequins are sewn by hand in the following way.
- The cut edges of the fabric are processed with bias tape.
- The material is laid out in a free space, then the pattern is laid out on the fabric and markings are made taking into account the future folds.
- They form folds and “bait” them.
- They try on the intermediate version on the rail and, if the dimensions match, they stitch it.
If desired, you can decorate the design with lace or add a jabot to it.
The curtain must be attached to the crossbar. Several methods are chosen:
- using Velcro tape sewn onto the lambrequin;
- tapes with loops where the curtain is attached to the cornice using hooks.
The footage of the fastening tape is measured according to the finished product.
Please note! Velcro tape is not suitable for heavy lambrequins.
Sewing swag
- To sew a swag for a soft lambrequin, first draw a pattern diagram.
- The fabric is folded diagonally and the fold of the material is secured.
- Attach a piece of material to the rail at a 45 degree angle and form folds, securing them with pins or needles.
- The bottom is finished with bias binding and the product is sewn on a machine.
- Velcro tape is attached to the base of the swag.
Fabrics for lambrequins
The choice of material from which curtains are sewn is approached with special care. For soft lambrequins, light and flowing materials are chosen: veil, semi-organza, linen, light curtain fabrics.
Important! Regular organza is not suitable for creating folds on curtains, as it is stiff and does not create smooth, beautiful lines.
For rigid lambrequins, dense curtain fabrics are chosen.
Immediately before purchasing, lay out the folds of the selected fabric.
When decorating a window opening, the color of the curtains is also taken into account; if fabrics with a pattern are used, then attention is paid to the pattern's rapport relative to the window.
Veil pattern
A popular material used for sewing curtains is veil. It is light and drapes beautifully into folds. Before starting work, calculate the required amount of material. This depends on the variation of the future curtain, how many sections it will consist of.
- If this is a simple drapery along the entire length of the window, then 15-20 cm is added to the length on each side.
- If the lambrequin has one section, then the value is multiplied by 1.5 times.
- If the drapery has 2 sections, then first calculate the footage of one section. To do this, divide the length of the cornice by 5 and multiply by 3, the resulting version is the length of one section. Multiply it by 2 and get the size of the entire lambrequin.
- If the curtain is planned with 3 sections, then after calculating the length of one section (the length of the cornice is divided by 7 and multiplied by 3), multiply it by 3.
- After calculating the fabric and determining the drapery option, swag, they proceed to the pattern. They make a pattern of lambrequins with full-size dimensions first on paper, and then transfer it to the fabric.
Important! Cutting is done at an angle of 45 degrees.
The next step is to machine-process the cut edges and sew the bias tape to the bottom edge. Form the folds and bait them. Then try them on the window and finally sew the curtain.
This is done with each element of the lambrequin. After sewing all parts of the curtain, proceed directly to its assembly.
Please note! First, assemble the curtain on the table and bait it, try it on the window, and then finally sew the product.
The final step is to attach the fastening tape (Velcro, with loops), steam the folds and hang the finished product on the window.
Hard lambrequin for curtains
This is a decorative element of curtains, a stretched (glued) fabric to a rigid base. Its second name is bando. It perfectly hides the cornice, and is also used in the interior to visually increase the height of the room.
When making a rigid lambrequin, adhere to the following rules:
- its height should be 1/6 of the length of the curtains;
- They use material identical to that from which the curtains are made.
How to make a hard lambrequin with your own hands
Before you start working, you will need a lambrequin pattern. It should be full size. To find out how much material you will need, measure the length of the cornice and add 10 cm from each edge for the fabric bend.
The pattern is a piece of fabric that has a straight line at the base of the cornice, and the bottom edge is cut out in symmetrical waves.
The pattern is transferred onto the fabric, which has an adhesive base.
Important! When cutting out the base, do not leave any fabric allowances!
Apply the adhesive base to a thick curtain, leaving allowances of 2-3 cm on each edge. Secure the fabric to the base with pins or needles, iron until the base adheres to the fabric thoroughly. Make the lining material according to the same pattern as the base. Then gather all the layers of the lambrequin and stitch the edges on the machine, stepping back 0.3 cm from it.
Attach the mounting tape.
Please note! If the lambrequin has a rounded bottom edge of the fabric, then small notches are made on the inside so that the fabric does not form unnecessary folds.
Also, when choosing a material, pay attention to its shrinkage during the sewing process.
Examples of curtain and window designs with lambrequins
When choosing window design, pay attention to the following factors:
- general color scheme of the entire interior;
- purpose of the room (bedroom, children's room, kitchen);
- ceiling height;
- the number of hours of daylight in the room (whether the room is located on the shady or sunny side);
- number of square meters in the room.
For dark rooms with insufficient daylight, choose light and airy curtains, soft lambrequins made of veil, linen, and semi-organza.
For light colors, thicker curtains are used.
If the room is small, then lambrequins are sewn simple using a minimum number of swags and elements. And for spacious rooms, more complex curtain designs are chosen.
In the interior of rooms, openwork elements are often used to decorate windows. They can be ribbon (along the entire length of the cornice) and modular (consisting of several elements). They are made of dense synthetic material. Dublerin is perfect for these purposes. In order to create such a decoration for windows, a stencil is used. It is drawn on thick paper in natural size, and then transferred to an adhesive base. Cut out and attached to the cornice or decorative curtain.
Important! For a more aesthetic appearance of the openwork element, laser cutting is used. It makes the edges perfectly even and does not allow them to “fray” over time.
If it is not possible to use laser cutting, the edges of the lace are processed with an overlock.
To beautifully decorate a window, it is not necessary to resort to the help of professionals. It is enough to decide on the design of the curtains, choose the appropriate fabric and accompanying elements and start sewing yourself. Following the instructions and observing all the necessary recommendations, sewing curtains will not be a difficult process.
And the final appearance of the product will please you for a long time, especially from the thought that it was made with your own hands.
