Roller blinds: material options and design solutions
Roller blinds resemble blinds in their laconicism and operating principle. However, there are differences. They are assembled by winding the fabric onto a roller and are controlled by a chain or electric drive.
They have different designs:
- vertical or horizontal ornament;
- drawings of plant or free themes;
- photo printing;
- without decoration, one-color, two-color, etc.
Roller shutters for windows use various materials. Artificial (polyester, etc.) and natural (flax, cotton, silk, straw, bamboo, etc.) bases, as well as their combinations, are used as a canvas. The latter are called "etched", since the fiber of natural origin is treated with acids for greater stability and combination with another material.
Curtains of the dimout and blackout categories are often made from polyester fabrics, since they are easier to process and construct the fabric.
The designer’s task is to combine the minimalist style of the structures with the design of a particular room so that it looks appropriate and harmonious.
Horizontal fabric curtains are made for apartments, private houses and offices. There are those that are as close as possible to the business style, but the greatest variety is represented by collections for residential premises.
Fabric canvases can be combined not only with the design of apartments in Scandinavian style or hi-tech. They look good in interiors that feature:
- art deco;
- classic;
- minimalism;
- postmodern;
- Provence.
Note! Natural fabrics – cotton and linen – are recommended for use in rooms with normal humidity. They are not suitable for balconies and bathrooms, as they quickly lose their appearance and properties.
Mat cloth
The material has a relief structure due to weaving. In the manufacture of mats, wood (bamboo stems, rattan, straw) and thinner plant fibers (rice, flax, cotton) are used. The combination of coarse threads in a complex weave makes the material suitable for several styles.
Such textile sophistication looks expensive even in the simplest setting. The mat is organic in interiors with many natural materials, good for classics with an abundance of mirrors. The color scheme (it can be any to choose from) will emphasize the naturalness of the space and add comfort.
Rolled tulle fabric
More common is a combination of roller blinds made of dense materials with a curtain made of similar fabric. Roller tulle is distinguished by its thinness, translucency and lightness. Patterned textiles are close to lace weaving. The composition of the fabric can be natural or synthetic, as well as combined. For roller blinds, choose a plain or textured fabric with a pattern.
Attention! If necessary, the tulle roll is cut to fit the required dimensions.
The fabric is quite unstable to dirt, quickly absorbs fats and dust, so it is better not to place the structure in the kitchen or balcony. In the dining area, you can make a mix of another fabric and regular curtains.
A white plastic window profile looks good with tulle roller blinds.
Canvas from fabric Alpha
A curtain made of 100% polyester is a reliable protector from bright light. The Alpha fabric belongs to the category of semi- and impermeable bases, so for a home or work space where periodic "extinction" of natural rays is necessary, this is one of the best options.
This type of artificial fabric has a number of advantages:
- It tolerates exposure to high temperatures and humidity well.
- Relatively cheap.
- Can be used for any window configuration.
- It has the required strength.
Both closed and open types of construction are suitable for using the fabric – the fabric looks aesthetically pleasing and is not subject to wear for a long time.
Fabric canvas Screen
The material is a combination material, quite inexpensive. It combines plasticized fiberglass and PVC. The advantages include:
- attractive texture;
- opacity and resistance to fading;
- high strength;
- moisture and fire resistant coating;
- low shrinkage rate.
The curtain made of Screen fabric will reliably protect you from the bright sun during the day and allow you to have a good rest at night. Suitable for any room, including a loggia or attic.
The style of furnishings for textiles is classic, high-tech, art deco.
Prima fabric canvas
Light, breathable, slightly shiny textile is also used for roller blinds. The advantages of the translucent Prima fabric are good ventilation and elasticity. It is made of polyamide with polyester, so it is moisture-resistant and durable.
A window equipped with a curtain made of such textile looks laconic and neat. The design is suitable for an open and closed type of mechanism - the fabric has good tension, does not gather or wrinkle.
Linen roller blinds
The natural base of the fabrics is the key to the eco-friendliness of the environment. The linen roll looks great in Provence interiors or similar styles.
An interesting texture allows you to make a long and short cut for non-standard windows or for vents. Due to its opacity, the fabric protects the living space well from bright light.
Recommended rooms: bedroom, children's room, living room. Linen is a creasing material, so it is preferable to choose a canvas with linen thread, and not completely made of it.
It is not worth hanging such curtains on balconies, kitchens and bathrooms - they absorb moisture, quickly become dirty and lose their attractiveness.
Polyester fabric
This is the most popular base for roller blinds. Polyester for them is produced both in pure form and with inclusions of satin, cotton, and other materials.
Advantages of the fabric:
- high light reflection;
- good utilitarian properties;
- moisture resistance;
- antistatic;
- minimal shrinkage;
- wear resistance.
Polyester curtains are suitable for most interior styles.
Unique materials for roller blinds
The variety of materials allows you to furnish the premises according to your taste. Roller blinds can be made of either fabric or wood fiber.
Bamboo, jute, rattan fabrics are a tribute to exoticism, which organically fits into modern European interiors. They look good in Japanese and other oriental designs, in combination with Asian motifs in the decor - sliding doors, mats, wicker furniture. Roller blinds with exotic-style decor look original.
In order for the roll to be well controlled, a high-quality mechanism and precision during installation are required. The hand should not touch the canvas too much and pull the chain too tightly - the connections can be quite fragile, and the material is hard.
What fabrics are suitable for indoor use?
In order for roller blinds to perform their role 100%, they must meet the following requirements:
- Harmoniously match the interior in shape and color. To do this, you can add the necessary decorative elements to the furnishings or choose curtains with trim.
- Be practical. Roller blinds are rarely washed, so they must be waterproof, resistant to deformation and temperature changes.
For living spaces, choose curtains in natural shades, made of non-toxic textiles. In utility rooms – the dining area – artificial or combined materials that do not absorb oils and odors are preferable. It is better if they have some kind of image or print on them – flowers, geometric figures.
The color scheme is chosen depending on the location of the rooms. In a southern room with an abundance of light, cold-toned curtains are hung. Spacious rooms are equipped with curtains of a dark palette, and in small ones - vice versa.
If the room has a lot of one color – light wallpaper and the same furniture, then you should add bright roller blinds for contrast.
Roller blinds look best alone or in combination with tulle. Heavy curtains are appropriate when the windows are high and wide. If necessary, fabric curtains can be adjusted in length or width.
