It is very important that the curtains harmoniously frame the window, and the folds beautifully and elegantly complement the interior decor. To create such an image, curtain tape is often used. This is a special fitting that is used to form folds on curtains and drapes. They can be of different widths and shapes, translucent or white.
In the center of the curtain tape, ready-made loops are sewn in, which are supposed to be attached to special hooks. The loops for the hooks can be sewn in two or three rows. Several threads run parallel to each other along the width of the fittings, from below and from above: they are intended to create drapery.
The main purposes and advantages of curtain tape:
- Allows you to elegantly and simply create drapery on fabric of any texture.
- There is no need to sew on additional loops and hooks.
- Does not shrink, which allows the product to be washed in any mode.
- Reduces sewing time.
- Quickly and easily tightened with threads on the sides.
- It is possible to adjust and fix the width of the curtains.

Curtain tape, types, description
Decorative tape is sewn on the front or back side of the product. It not only serves as a pleat assembly, but also decorates the product. Original decorative tape for curtains can be sewn on: the bottom edge, along the perimeter, on the sides. It can be additionally decorated with stones, rhinestones, lurex, beads.
Types of decorative braid:
- For puffs. This type creates a decorative drapery of a special shape. This technique looks great on plain materials, creating a corrugated effect.
- Ruffles. They are sewn onto the front side of the product. Country style curtains are the most common model using decorative fittings in the form of ruffles.
- With ornament. These are products with various patterns, ethnic motifs. You can find decorative braid in Greek, Moroccan, African, English, Arabic, Japanese styles. With the help of such a decorative detail, accents are placed and a special ethnic element in the interior is emphasized.
- With fringe. Used in styles with lush decoration: art deco, classic, empire, Victorian, oriental style.
- Openwork with lurex. Original decoration for curtains, which will make the product elegant and complete.
Tape with loops
Curtain tapes with loops are widely used; they are inexpensive and can be sewn to the back of the curtains without any particular difficulty. Rows of loops for hooks run along the top and middle lines of the product. There may be several of them.
- With two rows of loops. For regular hanging of curtains on hooks.
- With four rows of loops. For adjusting the length of curtains without shortening the edge.
Please note! If the curtains are sagging, it means there are not enough curtain hooks and they are calculated incorrectly. The second reason: the tape is too thin and narrow.
Tape with loops can be of two types:
- Transparent. Made of nylon, designed for light translucent fabrics: organza, veil, mesh. Such fittings will be invisible on thin and light fabric. The process of sewing on a transparent tape is more labor-intensive and requires some experience and skill.
- Not transparent tape. Made of cotton for thick curtain fabrics. Before work, it is necessary to steam the tape to avoid unwanted shrinkage on the finished product.
Adhesive tape for curtains
The use of adhesive fittings for curtains is justified only if the material is lightweight.
The procedure for fixing the adhesive tape.
- Heat the strip with an iron; the high temperature will melt the glue on the tape to a liquid state.
- Carefully fix the tape to the curtain before the glue hardens: it is securely connected to the curtain.
Curtain tapes
They are divided into two types based on the formation of assembly types.
- Horizontal gathers. Used for sewing traditional curtains and lambrequins.
- Vertical assemblies. Used for sewing Roman, French and Austrian curtains with lifting mechanisms.
Curtain rod tape: description, functions, photos
- Eyelet. Made of nylon material with a layer of glue applied to the surface. It can be used to install plastic or metal rings on the curtain. Its use is not mandatory, but desirable: curtains on an eyelet curtain tape do not deform after washing and will last much longer.
- For pipe curtain rods. Depending on the diameter of the pipe, the width of the curtain rod tape is selected. Threads are sewn into the back of the tape, which are strung on the pipe curtain rod at the same distance.
- For a string curtain rod. This is a structure with a stretched thin wire on which the curtain is stretched using a special tape.
- Tape with hooks and Velcro. A great option for heavy curtains. The sticky part is attached to the fabric on one side. The hooks serve as a strong connection between the cornice and the fabric.
- Velcro tape. Preferably used for curtains with vertical assembly. This type can withstand significant weight, even with the use of a lower weight.
- With a magnet. Small magnets are fixed on a strip of tape of small width, at the same distance from each other.
Assembling curtains on tape
Let's consider the design of the assembly of tape curtains.
- Regular folds. Relevant for any texture of material, suitable for almost all types of interior design. To create a beautiful drapery, you need 1.5 times more fabric than the length of the cornice.
- In the form of a cylinder. Such folds are relevant for heavy types of curtains. When forming cylindrical folds, it is necessary to ensure that the curtains look symmetrical at the bending points.
- Ray folds. This type of assembly creates a unique elegant look. It is used to decorate long curtains.
- French assembly. To create a triple pleat, hooks must be fixed at the back of each pleat.
- Byte drapery. A great option for plain fabrics. Using tape, you can form even folds. The length for this drapery should be at least 2.5 times the length of the cornice.
- Puffs. This type of drapery resembles a honeycomb. To create it, you need to take a wide ribbon with several rows of loops. Puffs look great on heavy plain fabrics, as well as on colored fabrics with a pattern.
- Waffles. A modern option: suitable for both short kitchen curtains and long curtains in the living room.
Various types of drapery make it possible to add a special chic to the interior. In curtain models where curtain tape is used, types of folds photos before and after show the obvious advantage of using this fittings in window decoration.
Which curtain tape to choose for curtains
When choosing a curtain tape, you need to take into account the style of the interior, the place where the product will hang, and what fabric it will be made of.
Main selection criteria.
- Fastening. The tape must correspond to the intended fixation option on the cornice: using hooks, Velcro, eyelets. Any option will do for a string cornice, and eyelets and hooks for a pipe cornice.
- Type of cornice. A cornice hidden under a plasterboard niche allows the use of almost any tape, as it will not be visible from under the strip.
- Curtain fabric. Thick fabrics made of velvet and velour, jacquard, linen and taffeta require a wide tape made of opaque material, since taking into account the assembly and texture of the fabric, the product will be quite heavy. For organza and satin, veil and silk, you can buy a medium or narrow curtain tape made of translucent material.
- Interior design. For a classic design, it will be relevant to use regular and radial folds. For an interior with chic elements, puff-type assemblies will be suitable.
- Assembly coefficient. It depends on two factors: the texture of the material and the type of assembly.
Selecting the appropriate tape width.
- Narrow. Suitable for light tulles and curtains without a special design, which only involve hanging on a cornice.
- Medium. Has an additional row of loops for hooks. The width of such a tape is from 40 mm. This type of tape is perfect for lambrequins and medium-weight curtains.
- Wide. Has a width size of 60 mm. The best option for heavy curtains and drapes with a high gathering coefficient.
