Despite its name, a coffee table is a multifunctional thing. It is used not only as a design element, but also as a full-fledged surface for all sorts of little things, a stand for snacks when watching a movie. It is impossible to overestimate its importance in families with children: it is convenient to dine and draw here. The most important parameter is the height. It is on it that the convenience of using this interior detail depends.

What are the product sizes?
There are no GOST standards regarding the height of a coffee table; they only concern the stability of a low product to various types of loads. The ideal height according to GOST is determined by the same parameter.
Among the many models of coffee tables, there are both two-meter "giants" and tiny ones, on which a cup of morning coffee with breakfast can hardly fit. Regarding the height, the difference is not so significant. The height of coffee table models ranges from 10 to 65 centimeters, although the classic option is considered to be the range from 45 to 50 cm. According to Le Corbusier's classification, a coffee table higher than 70 cm is already considered a dining table.
The main parts of the product are:
- table top;
- one or more legs.
Its size and height largely depend on the shape of the tabletop.
Table top shape | Coffee table parameters |
Square | The standard is considered to be a tabletop of 80x80 cm. With these parameters, any leg height will do. |
Rectangle | With a standard width of 80 cm, the length can be up to 160 cm. The height of the coffee table should be less than average – up to 50 cm. |
Circle or oval | A universal shape that suits any height, length and width parameters. |
How to Choose the Height of a Coffee Table
There are several recommendations for choosing the appropriate height of the product.
- According to state product standards, the height of the support structure should be selected based on the expected load on the table during operation.
- Le Corbusier's qualification states that the main criterion for choosing the height of a coffee table will be the convenience of interacting with it while sitting in your chair.
- Modern designers have concluded that the product should not exceed the height of the seat of the sofa next to which it is located. The table can only be lower than it.
- Another rule is that the height of the product should be proportional to the size of its tabletop: the larger it is, the lower the support should be chosen.
The best option would be to combine all four approaches to choosing a product, then the coffee table will serve you well for many years.
