The Benefits of Making a Chair Yourself
A chair made by yourself will cost significantly less, and one made according to your own sketch will meet the intended parameters and the required level of comfort for the baby.
All natural wood parts can be purchased in specialized departments of construction stores. They will select boards and bars of the required sizes for you.
A children's chair, created with your own hands, is a good piece of furniture for a child. In the process of work, you take into account the dimensions of the seat and backrest, the most comfortable for a growing baby, check the strength of the structure directly at home.
A wooden chair made with your own hands can be decorated according to your taste, rather than being satisfied with a ready-made solution from purchased furniture.
Necessary materials and tools
To create a chair, you will need various materials. Individual parts will be made from them. First of all, these are wooden blocks and planks, from which the frame, seat and back are assembled. Instead of natural solid wood, you can use chipboard or plywood, but these materials are short-lived. For fastenings, take self-tapping screws in sufficient quantity. You will need medium-hard sandpaper.
Dimensions of bars (length):
- support legs – up to 20 cm;
- seat frame connecting strips – up to 20 cm;
- backrest crossbars – up to 20 cm.
In the manufacturing process, the thickest bars with a cross-section of 5x5 cm are used for the legs. For the planks, parts with a diameter half as large as the support ones are taken.
The parameters of the seat board (height and width) should also not exceed 20 cm. The back part can be slightly higher, but preferably no more than 30 cm.
We recommend that you avoid plastic products for two reasons:
- they are less durable;
- The environmental friendliness of such products has not been proven 100%.
To make a chair with your own hands, you need the right tools:
- screwdriver;
- screwdriver;
- jigsaw;
- wood saw.
The assembled chair will "require" original decor. In addition to the carving option, you can use paint or other materials to apply a drawing or applique. To accurately apply the image, you will need a stencil.
We decide on the design and construction
Any option can be created for a wooden product. A children's chair is usually made with straight supports and the following forms of the back structure:
- solid square or rectangular;
- wide truncated cone;
- straight through (with a crossbar).
For the selected design solution, the parts are processed in accordance with it.
Making a product with your own hands requires careful preparation. It is imperative to make a draft of the project in advance. Visually depict the connection diagram of all the parts separately with calculations of sections and lengths. Following the sketches, you will recreate the model in reality with precise parameters. A chair where all the thoughtful dimensions are observed will be “fit” the baby, will not create inconvenience.
Certain models are designed for the child to sit at a common table with other family members. In this case, high legs are chosen for the product, which are not attached exactly vertically to the seat and the floor, but more widely. The lower part of such a chair will look like a truncated cone, connected for stability by wooden blocks along the perimeter. The upper part will be approximately 30-35 cm below the table level.
If you have certain skills, you can assemble a folding product. Such items are easy to put away in storage places if necessary.
Manufacturing process: step-by-step instructions
After preparing a drawing with precise parameters, we begin to assemble a simple children's chair.
- Calculate the length of the legs exactly according to the diagram and cut off the excess with a hacksaw.
- Cut out the crossbars to size that will secure the frame in the seat area.
- Connect them to the supporting structure. Add furniture glue for reinforcement.
- Attach the pre-cut back and seat using self-tapping screws.
- All wooden parts must be sanded to remove any roughness or burrs.
If the parts are disproportionate, "adjust" them according to the calculation scheme using a hacksaw. To make the chair created with your own hands comfortable, ask the child to sit on it, ask how comfortable it is.
If all the dimensions were determined correctly, the child will like the new furniture. To make the parts smooth, go over the surface with sandpaper again.
For varnishing the product, use only safe compounds - a special coating for children's furniture, environmentally friendly and having the appropriate certificate.
After the external varnishing, let the chair dry thoroughly, a day or two. Then you can proceed to decorative finishing, if such is intended. If it consists of applying carving, then varnishing is done after the artistic processing and sanding of the parts is completed.
Decorating a chair
Use a jigsaw for carving. You can make a decoration in the form of a flower by cutting it out in the center of the back, or any geometric figure. First, mark the place of the future decoration with a pencil so that the carving is even. Such parts as legs and the back can be carved. The corners of the seat can be rounded using a jigsaw and sandpaper.
The top can also be made not strictly rectangular, but a truncated cone, rounded, composite. In the latter version, additional bars and crossbars will be needed - one or two. They are fixed by special holes in the places of connection with the back frame. This is a rather labor-intensive process, but if desired, you can choose this option.
All processing of the parts must be carried out before the chair is assembled - this way the work process will be faster, more convenient and neater.
To make a hand-made piece of children's furniture look more interesting, you can apply a drawing to the back and seat. To do this, you need to use safe paints. The color scheme should be bright and cheerful. Simple ornaments, plant patterns, and imitation children's toys, such as cars, look great on wooden furniture.
Due to the small size of the product, the large pattern will become a kind of accent, attracting the child’s attention – he will enjoy sitting on such a beautiful chair, playing or having breakfast.
The image will turn out smooth if you use a stencil pre-cut from paper or thick plastic.
In decoration, you can use appliques - there are plenty of bright adhesive films on sale. Whether the image will be single-color or multi-colored - depends on your imagination.
It is not recommended to use voluminous (protruding) parts, both small and large, in finishing the seat or back of a child's chair. Firstly, it is inconvenient for the child, and secondly, they quickly fall off with frequent use of the product.
