Quilting requires patience, meticulousness, even courage. A quality result depends a lot on experience, constant careful control of the situation. Even experienced seamstresses can rarely quilt a blanket correctly.

Pattern for stitches
You can apply a stitch pattern using a needle and thread, special adhesive tape or chalk.

However, you shouldn't be afraid to take on such work. Following the instructions, your inner feeling, you will definitely achieve the desired result.

Usually, either a patchwork blanket or a cotton blanket is quilted. Let's look at each option in more detail.

Before you start quilting, you need to make all the necessary preparations.

Preparing for hand quilting

First of all, decide how to apply the stitches: by hand or with a sewing machine. Having chosen the first option, it is important to immediately acquire tools, a standard set consists of the following tools.

  • Large hoops. The larger the diameter, the better. Make sure the hoop is comfortable to hold in your hands.

  • At least two thimbles, because the needle will have to be “received” from both sides of the blanket.

  • A strong needle. The shorter its length, the neater the finished blanket. Working with a short needle, you will get small, neat seams.

    Fine needle
    A thin small sewing needle
  • Medium-thickness threads, for example, #30. Too thin a thread will break, too thick – too noticeable. Take the color that best suits the fabric, for a patchwork blanket choose any shade that suits the given color scheme.

The first step of the actual work is a basting stitch, which will connect the lining, interfacing and the front side of the blanket together. Usually, patchwork fabric does not require marking the pattern: simply stitch the joints of the pieces of fabric.

At this stage, the preparations are complete and you can begin stitching the pattern.

Working technique

Lay out the blanket fabric
We lay out the fabrics of the blanket in the correct order

The seams themselves are made with regular stitches used for any similar product.

We mark the stitch pattern
We mark the stitch pattern on the top fabric and pin it in place.

More important here is to consider the essence of the first quilting seam.

  1. To begin, position the hoop so that the work is facing towards you.
  2. Take a fairly long thread, a needle, then make a knot at the end of the thread.

    Hold the needle correctly
The needle should be held at a right angle to the top layer, piercing all 3 layers, pulling the thread down.
  3. Pass the needle through the entire blanket from the bottom up so that the knot “hides”, remaining inside the middle layer – the filler.

We sweep along the chipped lines
We sweep along the pinned lines, removing the pins as we sweep.
  4. Insert the needle half a centimeter from the intended end of the stitch.
  5. Using your thumb, pick up the fabric just a little bit to create a small fold, insert the needle at an angle, taking it from the other end.

    Sewing on the lining
We fold the excess lining onto the upper surface, bend the edge inward by 10 mm, pin it and baste it through three layers, sew the lining with a blind stitch

When the thread runs out, you need to hide its tail under the previous stitch, and start the next one according to the first one.

Quilting a blanket by hand
Hand quilting gives the product extra softness, but it is very time consuming.

How to quilt a blanket on a machine?

Machine foot

The spring loaded foot is suitable for quilting, darning and embroidery

This method is objectively easier than manual. You only need to prepare a special darning foot and a strong needle.

We make the first two or three stitches
We bring the lower thread to the top and make the first two or three point securing stitches
Needle position at the bottom during work
Positioning the needle down when working with the foot down will prevent the fabric from shifting.

The main rule of work technique is uniformity: make sure to maintain the same sewing speed during the process.

Straight stitch blanket

Using a machine, quilting is most often done on quilts with artistic stitching.

Curved stitch
Curved quilting – curved lines are quilted on a machine using the “free-motion” technique

To do this, prepare a full-size pattern. It is better to apply the pattern with chalk or pencil on top of the fabric, and then stitch the contours.

Dotted stitch
Dotted stitch is suitable for creating arbitrary shaped ornaments

High quality edge sealing

There are many ways to create a beautiful border, the most common one is the “cheesecake”.

First of all, leave a few free centimeters of the back of the bedspread, if you skipped this step, use a separate wide fabric tape. The back (or tape) needs to be folded to the front side and make a seam along the perimeter of the product, trying to get closer to the edge of the folded section.
