Future mothers and fathers, having learned about the addition to the family, begin to actively prepare for the magical event - the birth of a child. Creating and decorating a children's room, buying nappies, diapers, toys, fairy tales - everything falls on the shoulders of the parents, having a great impact on the size of the wallet.

Due to high expenses, the budget quickly evaporates, so you need to start saving. Saving does not mean buying bad and low-quality products. Saving means thinking with your head and calculating the budget correctly. A good way to save the budget is home sewing of children's things. For example, a blanket. In the store, you can find blankets of different quality and color, different shapes and brands, but the markup makes itself felt. In online stores there is no such markup, but is it possible to virtually touch the blanket, check the quality of the seams? A good option is to make a blanket from minky plush with your own hands.

Why plush and cotton?

Minky Plush is microfiber. Soft, gentle, pleasantly lies on the body. Warm, breathable, the baby will be warm, but not sweat.

It is 100% polyester. Many consider this a guarantee of poor quality. Modern technologies are constantly developing, so synthetic material is no worse than natural, and in some ways even better. There is no unpleasant smell, and it does not absorb odors from the environment.

The material is very dense, so it will be difficult to tear or wipe. It also does not wrinkle, easily tolerates stains. You can wash it at least every week, and it will not lose its rich color, its softness and tenderness.

Quality plush is American-made. But material from European, Chinese and Korean factories will do.

Cotton is natural and hypoallergenic. It is breathable, allowing the skin to breathe. It absorbs 20% of moisture, remaining dry. A variety of colors and prints provides a choice to suit your taste.

Manufacturers of high-quality cotton are American, Korean, and Polish factories. Cotton from Europe and China will also do.

How to sew a summer and winter blanket from minky plush for a child yourself?

First, you need to wash the cotton fabric in warm water. As a result of washing, the blanket may change its size, so it is better to let only the cotton deform, otherwise the blanket will be disfigured.

Dimensions for baby blanket:

  • 100×100 cm;
  • 100×110 cm;
  • 100×120 cm.

You can make a smaller blanket, but then it won’t last long, because children grow very quickly.

  1. Lay out the plush on a flat surface. Measure out the required size and cut off the excess. Do the same with the cotton fabric.
  2. Place the two types of fabric together, right sides together. Since the plush stretches well, it is better to pin its edges to the edges of the cotton.
  3. We make a basting or immediately stitch on the machine with a regular stitch, stepping back from the edge 5-10 mm. You need to leave about 15 cm so that there is an opening through which you can turn the product to the front side.
  4. After turning the bedspread right side out, you need to sew up the opening with a blind stitch, either by hand or by machine.

You have sewn a light blanket with your own hands, warming the child during cool summer nights. It is worth making the same for cold weather, it will be denser, therefore, it will retain more heat and warm the baby. The manufacturing principle is the same, only it is necessary to add synthetic padding.

  1. Cut out equal pieces of synthetic padding, cotton and minky plush.

    Place the fabric on a flat surface, smooth it out, pin the pattern to it and cut it out.

  3. We pin the edges, sew with a regular stitch, stepping back 1 cm. We leave 20 cm unsewn.

  4. We turn the blanket inside out through the resulting hole and sew the unstitched area by hand.
    We leave a slit
    Leave a 15-20 cm slit so that you can turn the blanket right side out

  5. Since there is synthetic padding inside, you should stitch the fabric several times along the outside. The synthetic padding can roll up when washing, causing some inconvenience, and multiple seams will help to fix it.

Care and washing of the blanket

Plush is made of polyester, so washing is not a problem. However, there are still a few recommendations that need to be followed:

  • You cannot use various chemicals, household chemicals containing chlorine, and you cannot bleach;

    Bleaching and exposure to chlorine are prohibited.
    If there is a triangle with slanted lines on the label, then it is prohibited to expose the garment to chlorine; a crossed-out line prohibits any type of bleaching.
  • do not dry in the open air, that is, under the sun's rays;

    Drying clothes
    Drying outside is not recommended.
  • washing is only possible at a temperature of 30 degrees and below;

    Wash at 30 degrees
    Washing is possible at a water temperature of 30 degrees
  • It is better to turn off the spin function when machine washing;

    Disable spin function
    The crossed out twisted linen indicates that the clothes should not be subjected to mechanical influences.
  • do not boil.

You should cut the plush carefully, as some shedding may occur: some pieces of fabric may come away from the main part. But this will not affect the main part of the fabric.

How to decorate plush fabric products?

If a regular, plain blanket or pajamas doesn’t suit you, then you need to think about how to diversify the product.

  • Instead of plain fabrics, you can buy ones with a pattern. They will look more cheerful.
  • Beautiful embroidery on a blanket. True, this requires special skills and dexterity, but it is still possible. The main thing is to secure the blanket well so that the embroidery does not turn out crooked.

It is a bad idea to sew on sequins, beads, and other small items, they can easily be torn off and swallowed. If the product is not for children, for example, a decorative pillow, then the list of decorations increases significantly. The main thing is to show originality.

Monochrome plush looks aesthetically pleasing and attractive. Don't stop what you're doing and think about how to decorate a baby blanket. Your baby will love it for its softness and warmth, and the fact that it's monochromatic doesn't matter at all.
