Necessary tools
Before you start working, you need to organize your work area and select all the necessary materials.
We will need:
- scissors;
- ruler;
- pencil or chalk;
- measuring tape;
- textile;
- pins;
- needle;
- spool of thread;
- iron;
- sewing machine.
Selection of materials and accessories
First of all, let's decide what we need a tablecloth for? For everyday use in the kitchen, items made of chintz or synthetic materials are great. They are easy to wash and iron, and even if a child gets them dirty, they can easily be returned to their original appearance.
Main types of fabrics:
- flax;
- cotton;
- curtain fabric;
- silk;
- lace;
- chintz.
If we want to decorate our interior with an exclusive item, then we should choose a model with lace or embroidery.
A thing made with your own hands from curtain fabric, the same as the curtains in the room, looks very advantageous.
Interesting coverings are obtained if you sew a tablecloth from two fabrics. For example, use a colored cloth and make its edging plain.
A unique festive atmosphere is created by embroidery done in the center of the tablecloth or along the edges of the product.
Experienced craftswomen can create coverings by sewing together parts of two or three types.
A tablecloth with lush scallops or lace frills will help add a festive feel to the room.
Round tables covered with a cloth with edges hanging almost to the floor look attractive. If the table is intended for receiving guests, then the overhangs should not be more than 30-40 cm, otherwise it will be uncomfortable for people to sit and stand up.
A few tablecloths can help you quickly change the design of a room, and you can simply change them depending on your mood.
If this is a product for the kitchen table for daily use, then you should pay attention to practical materials that are easy to care for.
How to measure a table depending on its shape
Whatever your table is, glass, solid wood or rattan, you can sew an interesting tablecloth for it, which will complement the interior and make the house more comfortable. The shape of the tabletop and its size determine how much fabric we need to buy for cutting. Let's consider all the options and reveal little secrets for beginner needlewomen.
Round table
Let's measure the radius, the length of the overhangs and add allowances for hemming the product.
Example: The radius of the table top is 50 cm, the overhang length is 30 cm, the allowance is 4 cm. Total 50+30+4=84 cm. This is the radius of our future product.
Knowing these numbers, we take the canvas, fold it in four (in half lengthwise and widthwise) with the front surface inside. We pin it with pins so that the fabric does not come apart. Then, using a tape measure and chalk, we measure the value obtained earlier. Carefully cut off the excess with scissors. We take out the pins. Our future tablecloth is ready for subsequent edge processing and decoration.
Square table
Let's find out the size. Since the table is square, all its sides are equal and we only need to measure one of them. Let's decide on the length of the overhanging part and allowances.
Example: The side length is 100 cm, we divide this figure in half. We get 50 cm. The overhang length is 30 cm, the allowance is 4 cm. Total 50+30+4=84 cm.
Now take the fabric, fold it in four with the wrong side out and pin it together. Measure the calculated 84 cm on each side. Then draw parallel lines using a ruler and pencil. Cut off the excess fabric along them and remove the pins. Now we can start edging our future tablecloth.
Oval table
First, let's make a pattern. In order for the product to look aesthetically pleasing and for the overhangs to be the same size, it is necessary to accurately repeat the oval of the table. Take thick paper and accurately draw the outline of the tabletop. Add the length of the overhanging side, approximately 30-40 cm, and seam allowances of 2.5-4 cm.
We will pin the resulting pattern to the fabric and cut out the panel. After that, we will remove the pins and start decorating the tablecloth.
Rectangular table
Sew a rectangular tablecloth with your own hands. To do this, measure the length and width. Divide both values by 2. Add the desired amount of overhangs and seam allowances.
Example: Long side – 120 cm, short side 60, divide these values by two. We get 60 cm and 30 cm. Overhang length – 30 cm, allowance – 4 cm. Total 60+30+4=94 cm. 30+30+4=64 cm.
Take the selected piece of fabric, fold it in half lengthwise with the right side facing inward, then fold it again widthwise. Secure with pins so that the fabric does not shift during cutting. According to the calculations, measure 94 cm in one direction and 64 cm in the other. Then, using a ruler and chalk, clearly draw the lines along which the cuts will be made. Cut off the excess material with scissors and remove the pins. Now you can begin processing the cuts and decorating the product.
Tablecloth edge finishing
To make your product look neat and beautiful, you need to decorate the edge.
There are many types of edging:
- with a simple line,
- with tape,
- with brushes,
- fringe,
- festoons,
- with openwork,
- lace.
The edge of a round tablecloth is finished with bias binding or ribbon. If you plan to trim the cloth with lace, you need to take this into account in your calculations. Otherwise, the hanging part will be too large.
To ensure that the product lies flat and does not stick out in unsightly folds, we recommend that you weigh down the edge of the fabric. To do this, you can sew a cord or pieces of plastic inside the hem. Then the tablecloth will drape well and not slide off the surface.
ATTENTION! For square and rectangular panels, it is important to correctly shape the corners. To do this, fold the panel in the corners with the wrong side up, mark the left hem, and stitch. Iron the seams and cut off the excess fabric, leaving about 1 cm to the stitching.
To process the edge on a sewing machine, first iron the allowances inward. Then pin or baste with the seam facing forward with the needle. Then make a straight line. Remove the baste and proceed to decorating, if it was provided.
