There are several techniques for making "floor covering" from old tights. Therefore, each needlewoman chooses the technique that works best or that she simply likes best.
How to weave a rug from tights on your fingers
Weaving from rings
To work you need to prepare:
- Old tights;
- Sharp scissors;
Cut off the top and bottom parts (socks) from old tights so that only the "legs" remain. Fold them in half (or in four) and cut into 3-5 cm wide pieces. Stretch the resulting "rings" slightly so that they curl and begin to resemble a tube.
Now let's get to work. Take a ring and wrap it around 4 fingers of your hand in "eights". Put the next ring on your fingers in the same way, and remove the loops from the first ring and transfer them to the back of your hand. Do the same with all subsequent rings. As you attach new rings, a canvas will form.
Another option is to weave a chain of rings. Fold the first ring in half and put it on only two fingers in a figure-eight pattern. Place the next double ring on top and remove the lower “loops” to the back of the hand. And so on. This technique resembles the technique of weaving with rubber bands. The result is a tourniquet.
We twist the tourniquet into a spiral, securing it with tailor's pins, and then stitch it with strong thread.
The carpet is ready! If you use tights of different colors, you get very interesting models.
From braids
Another model of a rug made without a hook. To make a rug from nylon braids with your own hands (by the way, not only adult but also children's tights will do) you need to cut not across, but lengthwise, so that the blanks are as long as possible. Having cut a sufficient amount, we fix the edge and begin to weave ordinary braids from three "strands".
Using different hooks and holders (stationery or curtain hooks), the process turns out to be very pleasant and exciting.
If desired, braids can be made from different numbers of strands.
After the braids are ready, they are connected. There are several options. First, twist the braid in a spiral and fix it with glue. Second, fasten it with a machine or hand stitch.
Making a rug from tights on a hoop
Or you can weave a round rug on a hoop.
To do this you will need:
- Hoop;
- "Yarn" made of nylon;
- Scissors;
- Needle and thread.
First, vertical threads are attached to a special hoop. Their number is arbitrary. The more of them, the denser the product will be. Then we pass horizontal threads through the vertical ones up and down, braiding the base. In each row, we fix the beginning of the work and the end. Having reached the hoop, we remove the work, and stitch the last row, fixing the working thread.
This technique is relevant not only for hoops, but also for rectangular frames.
Socks, T-shirts, pieces of fabric or knitted yarn are also used for knitting. The more different the texture of the "yarn", the more interesting the canvas will be. Perhaps it will no longer be a doormat, but a handmade picture.
The rug in the weaving technique resembles a woven fabric. And when using multi-colored pieces, it looks very stylish.
How to crochet a rug from tights
Round rug
The "yarn" for this product is prepared as follows: the nylon "legs" are cut lengthwise into strips. Another option is to cut in a spiral.
Let's start knitting. Close 5 air loops into a ring. Continue knitting with single crochets, gradually increasing the number of loops so that the rug lies flat.
If you have "yarn" of different colors, it is better to attach it, alternating. You can do this without knots. Just when one thread runs out, carefully put the second thread under the edge of the first and continue working.
The size and color are determined based on your personal wishes.
Oval rug
The "threads" for the oval crochet rug are prepared in the same way as for the round one - the longer the thread, the better. And you can knit it using any pattern for an oval cloth.
For example, a rug made of tights according to this pattern looks laconic but very interesting. If you don’t want to knit “lush columns” and air loops, you can knit the entire fabric with columns with one yarn over.
It is worth noting that when using multi-colored “yarn”, you don’t have to worry about the pattern; the item will look interesting anyway.
Useful tips
- Don't throw away your old tights, put them aside and as soon as you have time, prepare the "yarn".
- If you dye beige tights in bright colors with regular dyes, you will have a cheerful palette of the original material.
- While knitting, do not tighten the thread, then the rug will be airy.
- If you don't have enough tights to make a rug of the desired size, continue knitting with jersey yarn or "threads" obtained from old T-shirts.
