Sewing decorative elements with your own hands: stages of work
Selection of material
A crucial moment before making napkins or a tablecloth from fabric with your own hands is the selection of fabric for sewing. The choice must be approached with special responsibility, the appearance of the models and their practicality in use will depend on it.
Important! The fabrics chosen for sewing should have sufficient density and weight. In this case, the things you sew will not slide on the tabletop or knees.
Napkins and tablecloths can be sewn with your own hands from various fabrics. Textile tablecloths and napkins can be made using both natural and synthetic fabrics, combining linen, lace, organza, satin. Combining opposites, you will understand how beautifully you can sew linen napkins using scraps of organza, satin.
Natural fabrics (thick cotton, linen)
Practical, have sufficient density and weight. Absorb moisture perfectly. The material is practical and wear-resistant, irons well.
Natural fabrics with an admixture of synthetic threads
The most common synthetic additive is polyester. Models made from mixed materials are more practical in use, are less prone to shrinkage. Even the most difficult stains are easily removed from their surface.
Important! Items made from blended fabrics cannot be subjected to high-temperature processing.
Synthetic material
These are fabrics made of 100% polyester. They are suitable for sewing tablecloths, but it is not advisable to use them for sewing home napkins. The fabric is practically incapable of absorbing moisture. A napkin made of synthetics will be difficult to use. It will not remove moisture from the table, and it is difficult to wipe your hands with it.
Important! Do not wash at temperatures exceeding 40 degrees.
Table napkins sewn by hand from fabric similar to the tablecloth look stylish.
How to correctly calculate material consumption
Material consumption for tablecloth
Consumption directly depends on the length of the tabletop, its width and the desired overhang length. Standard overhang length: 25-45 cm, or fits the floor.
The longer the overhang, the more beautiful the model looks, but a tablecloth with a long overhang is not practical for everyday use. Models with an overhang length of no more than 25 cm are practical for everyday use.
Important! When calculating the overhang length, take into account the shrinkage percentage of the material. We recommend washing and ironing the fabric before cutting.
Material consumption for napkins
First, decide on the desired size. The most convenient size is 50x50 cm. With this option, the size of the workpiece should be 58x58 cm.
Open
Before cutting, iron the material. Lay it out on a flat surface, using a pencil and a ruler, make marks on its surface. Connect the marks into a light line, along which we then cut off excess flaps. Special patterns for rectangular or square models are not needed.
Important! The cuts must be absolutely even. Use sharp scissors. Otherwise, the edges will crumble, which will complicate further processing.
Processing of the workpiece
How to hem a tablecloth beautifully and stylishly? The main stage in this process is processing the corners. We will teach you how to sew corners on a tablecloth and napkins correctly. How to neatly and quickly hem a tablecloth or napkins with a corner? To do this, you need to do the following.
- Place the workpiece with the wrong side up and fold it to the wrong side. The fold should be 1 cm. Fix the fold with pins. If pins are inconvenient, you can baste. Iron along the length.
- On both sides of the corner we determine segments in double the size of the planned hem width. Then we connect both marks using a ruler and a pencil.
- Fold the material in the corner so that the marks made match. Secure the fold with pins. Stitch the corner on the machine along the markings made.
- Cut off the excess, leaving an allowance of no more than 5 mm. Turn the stitched corner inside out and iron it.
Using the same method as described above, you need to consistently process all the corners of the tablecloth.
Stitching the hem
We have told you how to quickly make a beautiful corner on a napkin or tablecloth. After processing the four corners, the question arises of how to process the edges of a napkin or tablecloth made of the selected fabric. We lay the tablecloth on the work surface with the wrong side up. We make folds on the wrong side. We fix them with pins or baste, and then iron them. We stitch the folds along the entire length on the machine. If desired, you can process the sides with a special blind stitch.
Decorating models
Tablecloths and napkins can be sewn from thick natural fabric with the addition of light lace inserts with flowers around the entire perimeter. Embroidery or applique will be a successful addition to the models.
The model with the addition of organza is luxurious, will beautifully decorate the table in the dining room, and will be an appropriate addition to a romantic dinner.
